Diagnosing Comm Problem

Well Known Member
I recently sold a SL-40 to another VAF'er, he installed it in a plane that previously had a SL-40 in the panel.

He says it will power up OK but will not receive, transmit or have squelch.

I thought it may be something simple like not making proper contact with antenna jack by not being completely seated in the tray but that is my best guess.

Anyone have any ideas about what could be the problem?

I would first start with what you said. Make sure it's fully seated in the tray. Why did he remove the original SL-40? Did he have a similar problem with that one?

Connector Pins

Check the connector pins .. one could have been bent during the seating process.

Jesse,
I don't know why he replaced the previous SL40, I never thought to ask.

Chaz,

I'll suggest he recheck for a bent pin in the connector.

I just checked with Garmin regarding repair cost and have the apparent standard fee of $500.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Glenn

I would recommend you have a local avionics shop at least take a look at it and bench check the radio before sending it in as there may not be anything wrong with the radio, sending stuff to Garmin is an expensive way to troubleshoot.
