3rd Year Performance #'s

I just signed off the 3rd annual condition inspection on the -9A, and I thought I would re-run some cruise performance #'s to see if she has lost anything. Plus, a meeting was cancelled, and the weather was perfect!

I preflighted, took off, ran on up to 8500ft, and set up for cruise. I locked on the Trutrak and took some 4 way data on the cardinal headings.

22.2" MP, 2270 RPM, LOP 6.0-6.1 GPH, carb heat about 1/4 on.

NTPS spreadsheet shows 151.6 KTAS with a small std dev. I was happy to find this is just a touch better than my Phase 1 test data. Over 28 smpg at 170+ mph, I guess I'll have to keep her......

Suitably inspired I ran some tests today and input the data into the NTPS spreadsheet.

TAS as indicated by my temperature and pressure corrected Dynon D100 is consistently reading 5 or 6 kts higher than that calculated from the GPS496 ground speeds.

Anyone know what this means? It implies that the pressure difference between the pitot and static ports is higher than it should be. It's unlikely that the pitot is high so could the static read low if it has a leak?

Those are really good looking numbers. The absolute perfect blend of economy and speed! For those of you who have never ridden in Pete's plane it is without a doubt the smoothest running RV I have ever been in. Probably one of the reasons it is so fast and efficient!
 
Year 4 Data -- just out of annual....

Looks pretty much the same after 750 hours. Can't complain.... Otto the pilot was flying, and the numbers were pretty steady. Cold -8C , but nice and smooth up at 8000. I think the temps gave me a knot or so....

Good stuff Pete. Yours has always been at least 7-8kts faster than mine. Although mine has never seen temps anywhere near that cold. But my Otto has buttons to push (gotta be careful which one you push), and a pulse. Thanks for sharing.

Kevin Horton had an article in Kitplanes a few months ago that answered your questions. There are some mods to try with your static port, but I don't remember all of the details.

It most likely means that the staic port is located in a place where the pressure is below static. Do you know that you have a leak, or were you just thinking that might be a possible cause? If you have a leak in the cabin the cabin pressure is usually lower than static which will make your IAS read high. You can compensate for a bad location by putting tape ahead of, reading low, or behind, reading high, the static port. What you are seeing is typical for most homebuilts! Two Q-200s that I know of had 15 kt errors, and three RVs had 9-12 mph errors.

I did some calibration flights a few weeks ago and found my static to read low. This makes my calibrated airspeed about 8-9 kts low at cruise. Here is my calibration curve. (FYI, I used the Van's recomended location and the Van's static kit with the pop rivet port)

Either my static leaks or I have position error. Since I just had a transponder check I assume position error. I read some where to fly down the runway just few feet high at several different airspeed and see if you get different altitude readings. I did this and got a 50 ft higher reading at 80 kts then when sitting on the runway. At 190 kts IAS (remember Vne is CAS) I got a 150 ft increase in altitude. Not sure if that 150 ft reduction in static pressure results is the entire 10 kts of IAS to CAS correction. I have been reading a lot on Kevin Horton's website lately. Since my flight computer shows Calibrated airspeed readout by inputting the data in the graph above, I have decided to not fuss with the static port location until I get the urge to experiment more. One thing I really learned this year trying to get accurate speed data, is that your accuracy starts with the accuracy of OAT probe and pitot/static system.

Try about 5-6 layers of Scotch tape right behind your two static ports and do your runway thingy again. 50' is 0.05"Hg and 150' is 0.15"Hg, so you definitely need to increase the static pressure by putting some tape immediately behind it, about 1/2"H X 1"L. On my friend's RV-6 he ended up with a thicky washer cut in half and surrounding the rivet to get rid of his 11mph, 9.6Kt TAS error.
 
Year 5 Speed Data

Finished the annual over Christmas and just now had the chance get out for some testing. 875 hr on the plane. RV-9A, O-320, Carb, Dual P-Mags, Hartzell

Conditions: Temp -9C, Altimeter 30.11, 8000ft, MP 22.1 in, 2260 RPM,
1/4 Carb Heat

She is holding right in there - about 151 KTAS on 6GPH, and still a hoot to fly.

Year 6 Performance Data

Hi Guys,

Here is the annual update - the old girl has a 1000 HRS and 6 yrs under her belt.

She has not lost a step according the PEC 4way GPS Spreadsheet - actually picked up a knot!!. We tested at 8000ft/8370ft Density, 0degC, with Otto the pilot holding altitude and GPS ground track. Engine was set to LOP at 6.0 GPH and 2270 RPM. Here are the stats:

29 statute MPG at 175 mph. I still love this plane!

Seven Wonderful Years!

The annual has been done for a bit, but I forgot to update the numbers.....until today....

She has 1150 hrs now and uses a quart every ~15-20 hrs. Not much has changed, except now I burn mostly mogas (?Qu? horror!)

I know you all have been waiting for year 8 numbers.....

Pretty boring, maybe a touch slower, but it was really cold at -16C. No complaints, still 151KTAS on 6GPH. Running Minnesota winter mogas at $2.37/gallon after road tax rebates and coupon discounts from the local retailer. Works out to be $0.0942/mile. Hello cheapo fun!

Hi Chaz,

I do a comp check every 50hr oil change b/c of the ECI cylinder AD. Compressions are 76/78/76/76 as of 1300 hrs. I'll see one down at 72 and then is it right back up next check. I have an E-Mag/P-Mag and a carb, they have all been good for me. I run auto plugs and change them at annual.

Mogas works well for me and we have a good source 91 EtOH-free nearby. 100LL works great too.

I know a -9A is not everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoy mine.

Ability seems to be engine/prop/carb heat, and timing advance dependent. Might be some magic dust required, too..... ;)

Year 10 Performance Numbers!

In the process of finishing the 10 yr annual on 9er-Pop-Hotel and had a nice cold day to do some performance runs. The old girl still scoots pretty well!

Same config since day one: ECI O-320, carb, Pmags, Hartzell. I am running 92 Mogas, LOP. 1750hrs. She has some scuffs and scratches now, but I am still thrilled!

Your numbers seem right in line with mine, Pete, maybe a knot or two faster. Given your MP and RPM, it looks like you're at about 64-65% power. What's remarkable though is you are doing 150 kts at 6gph. With my mags a similar power setting/TAS requires 7gph. I almost can't wait until my mags need the 500 hour overhaul. I'll probably just sell the cores and go with pmags.

In any case your longitudinal data is remarkably consistent. Good to have!

I think "she has still got it" at about 1950 hours. MOGAS, LOP, Carb, Hartzell, Dual PMags, nutty meat servo........ Fuel flow was between 5.9 and 6.2 GPH throughout the runs.

Cold, Clear and a Million. Takeoff was, um, "exciting" for a tired, old O-320. Tower laughed and and said "Wow! - You picked the right day to do that!" He was not wrong....... Pushing her in was not much fun, but worth it!!!

No engine maint other than oil changes and compression checks this year. All the cylinders were 76/80 or above at 1900hr check.

TAS and windspeed from three (GPS) groundspeeds.

Determine your groundspeed on three headings that differ by 120 degrees (eg 40, 160 and 280 degrees), call these v1, v2 and v3

Let

vms = (v1^2 + v2^2 + v3^2)/3
a1= v1^2/vms -1
a2= v2^2/vms -1
a3= v3^2/vms -1
mu= (a1^2 + a2^2 + a3^2)/6

Let bp and bm be the roots of the quadratic b^2 -b + mu =0 ie:

bp= 1/2 +sqrt(1/4-mu)
bm= mu/bp

The TAS and windspeed are then given by sqrt(vms*bp) and sqrt(vms*bm) provided that the TAS exceeds the windspeed. If this is not the case, the roots are exchanged. This is a handy way to check your TAS (and the calibration of your airspeed indicator) using your GPS groundspeed, even though the wind is unknown.

Got out and up today to see how the old girl is doing at cruise.

Cloudy, but 02degC and a pretty nice day. She seems to still have it at 12+ years and 2096 hours!

O-320, carb, dual EI, Hartzell, mogas. Otto flying the legs.

Yep - The D-10A has the dreaded black spot - it is stable for now, so I am just leaving it. The D-10A and the EMS-D10 have been great for 12 years and I know Dynon will fix me up when time comes.

You seem to have a very healthy engine at 2000+ hours...congrats! But your CHTs vary by quite a lot. Have you thought of making some changes to the baffling to even them out?

Good catch! I even out the CHTs by applying partial carb heat. On the 3rd run yesterday I turned the carb heat off to see if it would make difference in speed or fuel flow(it did not).

My CHTs are usually within about 10-20deg of each other with the exception of #1 that will be a bit cooler.

I'll get a pic next time I am up.

With the corresponding low EGT it was looking like mixture distribution. Clever use of carb heat!! After 2000+ hours, it can't be that bad :rolleyes:

It's crazy how close our numbers are.
I have a 9A with O-320, 160HP, and Hartzell prop.
I was getting 150KTAS after 3 direction check.
I just got my nosewheel pant put on (was running without) and am about to retest.
I'm hoping for another 2kts.
