Southwest Airlines rolls out the Red-Carpet
for Montgomery High School (TX) ENP Students
Montgomery high school PLTW Aerospace Engineering students are building a real airplane at their school, a 2-place Van’s Aircraft RV-12, under a program developed and sponsored by Eagle’s Nest Projects. ABC Channel 13 News recently visited the school’s airplane build project (video) and in a surprise ending to their interview, announced they contacted Southwest Airlines and that SWA agreed to provide the ENP/Montgomery build-students a Red-Carpet tour of their facilities at Hobby airport together with intern opportunities.
SWA Red-Carpet day – students were welcomed by Liliana Rambo, GM Wm. P Hobby Airport, Rhonda Arnold, COH Chief Community Relations Officer, Vic Zachary, SWA Ground Ops, and David Mitchell, SWA Tech Ops Maintenance. Ms. Rambo spoke about her education/career journey and TSA agents provided an action demonstration of their trained dogs. The group was then introduced to SWA’s education and outreach teams, the outstanding folks that planned the entire day. Before breaking into groups for the facilities tour, the education and outreach team provided insightful information about SWA careers and internships.
The “behind the scenes” facility tour included the turn/baggage area and a walk on the ramp following the baggage all the way to the aircraft, an inside view and detailed explanation of gate ops, and a grand tour of the “Command Center”. The group was then escorted to the maintenance facility where they received a warm welcome from everyone there. The maintenance team is amazing; they shared knowledge about the physics of flight, described in detail what they do in the hangar, provided an up close view and description of a 737 landing gear, belly, baggage area, and engines. They also opened a 737 so the students could get an intimate inside look – and they even fired up the avionics!
And not to be overlooked, the SWA team also provided an outstanding lunch for everyone and the creature comforts were second to none! Glen Salmon coined a phrase for Eagle’s Nest Projects that could also be shared by SWA; “Mentors build the Student… Students build the Airplane”. The kindness and generosity of SWA is overwhelming and their commitment to mentoring youth will no doubt pay big dividends in the future of these young men and women and the future of our country.
