What did you do with your RV this weekend? (10/8-9/2022)

I had the pleasure of giving two of our son’s college friends their first small plane rides. They both ended up flying around 15 minutes all by themselves with minimal input from me. Natural pilots!

Maintenance time, I suppose 30 min happy time in the car seat followed by tolerating the pack for 20 minutes is as much as I can hope for.

Engine out practice, stalls, slow flight

I had a fun flight. My last practice session before my check ride. I did a couple engine out simulations to about 10' over a grass runway and that was fun. Slow flight is a bit tricky in the 9 but it is fun to try and keep altitude at 60 knots.

My check ride is Thurs if the weather is ok. And when I say weather, I am talking about wind! Michigan is a bit windy all the time but lately it has been hard to find fun days to fly. At least it isnt -15!!

Bonifacio, Corse, France

We flew to Corsica for two nights, to Figari actually. Great airport for GA, with Cheap Avgas, landing fees not too high (yes it is a thing in Europe ;), and lots of rental cars.

2 1/2 hours flight over mountains, on top when crossing the Italian Piemonte, then overwater before flying over the 8000ft high mountains on island Corse.

Flew the RV-12 to Hines (88D) Huron, OH yesterday for their Octoberfest cookout. Today we flew to My Place fly-in (3OH7) Cardington, OH for their 9th annual breakfast fly-in.

What did you do with your RV this weekend? (10/8-9/2022)

Timed PMags.
  • Used laser to align flywheel TDC mark with split in case (first photo).
  • Fabricated a bracket to attach fiber optic to each PMag LED and ran to a location that's visible with the oil filler door open.
  • Picked and ate grapes with the time I saved.

You grow grapes in your garden Joe?

We flew up to Cable Airport near LA. Met up with my wife’s sister and her husband. She was given some tickets to the USC vs. Washington State football game at the Coliseum. Had a great time tailgating and watching the game.

Well, I went and looked at an RV-4 that I was interested in. And tonight I came to an agreement with the owner to buy it. So I guess I went and looked at my RV-4 this weekend! More details, pictures, etc. to come once I get it home in a few weeks.

Hi Fabian,
Awesome picture of the Matterhorn !!!

Completed annual inspection

I completed my first annual inspection.
Hours flown since first flight Nov 21/2021: 66
No concerns to report, outside these findinds:

The SCAT tube from the heat muff to the heat valve on the firewall showed some rubbing marks despite seemingly sufficient clearance beneath the prop governor. It seems that when flying, air movement/pressure raises the tube enough for it to rub beneath the governor. Additional lacing used to restrict movement.

Very, very small sepage from the #4 cylinder head oil return. Seems to originate from around the AN fitting into the cylinder head. I will closely monitor until next oil change. I know it won't go away by itself. Removing that fitting and re-sealing with Loctite 567 might solve the issue.

One of the 4 landing gear nuts in the gear tower was under torqued. About 1/6 turn was needed to reach proper torque. Did I mention what a monster pain it is to check these?? Luckily, I did the tower mod, otherwise I don't know how I could get in there. With help of the bigger opening, I could remove the interfering screw and nut just above the forward bolt nut and the interfering fuel vent AN fitting just above the rear bolt nut. Wire bundles were also moved out of the way. Doing a poor imitation of a catterpillar in the front cabin, even with the forward stick removed and padding on the center spar section, left me with bruises on the lower ribs... During construction, I knew about dropping the bolts from the top and securing the heads inside the tower. I recall not doing it because the bolt/nut underneath would protrude through the fairing... What a poor decision that was !!! The airplane is back in service now, and in retrospect, I will strongly consider reversing these next year, modifying the fairing accordingly.
I will be 61 years young next month and consider myself in good physical shape. Hopefully still flying and taking care of this bird in the future, I'd like to avoid difficult access to these nuts.

I found water stains in the belly from under the baggage floor to the tail. Small pools formed ahead of the bulkheads. I flew a few times through light rain, nothing serious. I dont think that's the cause. The plane is hangared but it did spend the week outside at Oshkosh last summer, including the monster Saturday night storm. Drainage holes were made in front of the bulkheads.

Everything else is A-OK.
Can't wait for the next flight !!

No pictures, but it was a beautiful day Sunday, so my son Alex and I went out and about in the RV-10. We flew up to the Chilhowee gliderport in the far SE corner of Tennessee and watched the fray from above. A half dozen gliders soaring the ridgeline which was interesting to watch from 8,000 above them.
