Did what it was made for!

The famed Ocracoke Run - to W95 for the weekend. Idyllic.

Solid undercast crossing the Pamlico sound, broke up right at the edge of the OBX. Looks like a beautiful morning in store for the return leg to our Virginia mountain home. 90 minutes to fly, but 8 hours to drive, including ferry ride. This airplane rocks!

Sorry for the rotated thumbnails - don't know how to fix that.

Found a new restaurant for me in the NE

We found a new airport restaurant we had not been to before in North NJ. Northwest of NY Greenwood Lake 4n1, 40 min flight for some good BBQ - not Texas brisket but still very good. The restaurant is in the FBO and note they have a constellation attached to the building. It is now an office space for the skydiving business.

We will definitely be back for more barbecue

$100 Breakfast Burrito

I went flying with my better half to Brenham, TX (11R) to meet with some fellow aviation conspirators.

She took this pic when we were turning base into Georgetown, TX (KGTU).

Last flight before condition inspection -- hope to be done in time for Petit Jean.

Monsoon rains have turned Northern AZ green

We've enjoyed a very good summer monsoon rain season this year in Northern AZ and I took the RV6 up to get some pictures and dodged some rain showers.

Used the time machine to fly my wife up to see her family on Saturday, then back home, back up on Sunday to pick her up and back home. 3 hours total flight time for 2 round trips versus at least 8 hours of driving in LA traffic.

Visited Spaceport fly in at 48U in Wyoming. Record attendance this year six airplanes and one project :)

Flew to Cody after that.

Flew to Boise for my FIL 90th birthday and bumped into another RV-10 (N707BJ) from Twin Falls. Always great for see another RV on the ramp.

You're Killing It

You guys are killing me.
I so want to be done and flying.....

But I guess that is the purpose of this thread; and why DR started it. It is working, just ask my wife where I am every weekend....

For me: working on engine cowl...

Toblerone Mountain

A friend of ours climbed Toblerone mountain today (Matterhorn). We took the easy way and flew over her to wave down/over…

She started today at 4a.m., by the time we‘ve been there she was already back at the base cabin, around 11‘000 ft.

My Day Trip Lunch Outing

First a little back story...

I've always been intrigued by Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay, MD ever since AOPA did an article about it a long time ago. It seems like it comes up every few years. It's on my bucket list and haven't made it yet.

Last year, June 2021 we took the Bonanza on a family vacation up the NE coast. But before going on the trip, I posted here for some suggestions:

https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?t=195652

Ed Sealing in msg #6 wrote about W29, the Bay Bridge Airport. Hmmm, sounds interesting and an opportunity that's tough to beat. Unfortunately, we had over scheduled and our plans changed on the return anyway. OK, W29 filed away for future reference. We ended up having an amazing 12 day trip! It left us with a desire to return to NE and see some of the other spots we missed.

Since then, I've overflown W29 a couple of times to and from aerobatic contests looking down on the beautiful bay wondering about those delicious crabs, crab dip, crab cakes, and soft shell crab sandwiches. The hook was set.

On Saturday, one of our local Falcon RV Squadron pilots asked about local places to fly into and grab something to eat. He was taking some passengers in a Cessna on a joy ride and specifically said he did not want to go on a three hour tour. My friends know me too well. It is not uncommon for me to fly relatively far for a good meal, sometimes as much as 200 nm. I jokingly replied to him and the rest of the Squadron that afternoon, "Funny you say, “not a three hour tour.” I’ve been considering flying up to Maryland just to get some crab cakes!" I said that because I've been thinking about the crab cakes subconsciously I guess. Two weeks ago I was returning from a contest in Toms River, NJ and I looked down at the Chesapeake Bay again and maybe it was churning in the back of my brain since then. Who knows?!

So I awoke Sunday morning wondering about my day. My wife was having a social gathering with a bunch of ladies and I usually like to make myself scarce. My kid is off to college now. What shall I do, some fiberglass work, change out a tire? I had nothing on my agenda for the whole day. Then a moment of brilliance... Get some crab cakes of course!

For those of you that know the Blues Brothers, "It's 106 miles to Chicago we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark and we're wearing sunglasses.. hit it!" In my case, it was 536 nm to W29, I had full tank of gas, no cigarettes, it wasn't dark, and I was wearing sunglasses and so I HIT IT! I had a great flight up at 11,500' just above the scattered clouds. I was chatting with a couple of local pilots after landing and tying down. One of them says, "Squaz." He recognized my airplane and it was none other than Ed Sealing. What a coincidence! He offered me a ride to the restaurant and even sat with me while I enjoyed some of the world's finest crab cakes! Thank you Ed!

In one day, I covered 1072 nm, logged a 7.0 on the Hobbs, and burned 63 g of AVGAS just to enjoy a great meal with RV friends and have a splendid time in my beloved N84JE. It doesn't get much better than that!

Zermatt is one of my most favorite places on Earth winter or summer! Love, the skiing, the après skiing, the sound of the cow bells in the valley, the hot chocolates, the raclette, and of course the stunning scenery!

7 hours for crab cakes--Mama mia-- you're a better man than me Squaz.:D

Shoot, I’m based in Kansas and have been to Tangier twice. This post has me thinking it should be a third time soon…….

Jerry, did you hear me on the radio when you arrived back at home base Sunday evening, telling about your crab cake run?

Yeah, I can hear everybody in the pattern at Falcon...

Spent a chunk of my RV weekend on development work, but Sunday evening was loop and roll time.

Yes, that's a real RV-6-7-9 firewall at 2000F.

I have been many places over the course of 1800 hours flying the RV, but Tangier keeps eluding me.

Yes, I did hear you! However I didn’t realize it was you. That must be really annoying to hear all the Falcon Field traffic. I hear Cartersville all the time but never Wetumpka. Thanks for chiming in!

Sounds like interesting work you’re doing! But nothing like some loops and rolls to clear the head!

Dan,
You could quick cook some crab cakes for us.

When's that cat coming out of the bag?

I dunno, when I'm happy I guess. There are a few beta installations ongoing, and I'm still testing, mostly confirmations of details not previously documented.

In the previous photo you were looking at (L to R) burner run time, temperature of the aluminum angle directly opposite the burner, temperature of the flat black radiant heat target, and front side temperature in degrees C and F, all for the thinnest/lightest insulation package.

Recall I've been instructing builders to put a two inch overlap in the SS foil, right down the center of the firewall, and seal it with aluminum tape? When it goes above 1100F or so, the tape melts and vents any flammable gas components from glues and binders into the engine compartment, where it hurts nothing...it's already on fire there. You can see the concept in operation in the previous firewall burn (the little yellow flames), and a post burn photo below.

Yesterday I stripped the SS foil from the test firewall to check the condition of the insulation (is it intact?) and further stripped and cleaned to see the condition of the firewall itself. No issues, no melted rivets, yada, yada. It would need rebuild before flight, as the aluminum bits have been annealed, but it's intact.

Documenting and confirming. Patience is appreciated.
.

Ocracoke is one of my favorite places in the world. My family used to vacation there every year when I was a kid. 1980-1992. I try to fly back as often as I can.

Hey Bill,
You are looking good these days as the quintessential country doctor !
My wife and I have been there (W95) many times over the past 30+ years. Have travelled there by land, sea and air. Sailed our boat there several time before we sold it 3 years ago. Spent almost 2 weeks this recent May camping in our Winnebago at the National Park campground. We like to buy fresh seafood at the in town seafood market and cook it up on our Blackstone grill. Have kayaked all over the island. Hope you are doing well and enjoying Hopalong !

Thanks for posting that update Dan. I'm right at that stage now.

By the way.....do you recommend insulation and SS on the bottom exhaust area on an -8? Do you just use fire seal to attach it or rivet it too? Thanks.
