The famed Ocracoke Run - to W95 for the weekend. Idyllic.
Solid undercast crossing the Pamlico sound, broke up right at the edge of the OBX. Looks like a beautiful morning in store for the return leg to our Virginia mountain home. 90 minutes to fly, but 8 hours to drive, including ferry ride. This airplane rocks!
Sorry for the rotated thumbnails - don't know how to fix that.
A friend of ours climbed Toblerone mountain today (Matterhorn). We took the easy way and flew over her to wave down/over…
First a little back story...
I've always been intrigued by Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay, MD ever since AOPA did an article about it a long time ago. It seems like it comes up every few years. It's on my bucket list and haven't made it yet.
Last year, June 2021 we took the Bonanza on a family vacation up the NE coast. But before going on the trip, I posted here for some suggestions:

Ed Sealing in msg #6 wrote about W29, the Bay Bridge Airport. Hmmm, sounds interesting and an opportunity that's tough to beat. Unfortunately, we had over scheduled and our plans changed on the return anyway. OK, W29 filed away for future reference. We ended up having an amazing 12 day trip! It left us with a desire to return to NE and see some of the other spots we missed.
Since then, I've overflown W29 a couple of times to and from aerobatic contests looking down on the beautiful bay wondering about those delicious crabs, crab dip, crab cakes, and soft shell crab sandwiches. The hook was set.
On Saturday, one of our local Falcon RV Squadron pilots asked about local places to fly into and grab something to eat. He was taking some passengers in a Cessna on a joy ride and specifically said he did not want to go on a three hour tour. My friends know me too well. It is not uncommon for me to fly relatively far for a good meal, sometimes as much as 200 nm. I jokingly replied to him and the rest of the Squadron that afternoon, "Funny you say, “not a three hour tour.” I’ve been considering flying up to Maryland just to get some crab cakes!" I said that because I've been thinking about the crab cakes subconsciously I guess. Two weeks ago I was returning from a contest in Toms River, NJ and I looked down at the Chesapeake Bay again and maybe it was churning in the back of my brain since then. Who knows?!
So I awoke Sunday morning wondering about my day. My wife was having a social gathering with a bunch of ladies and I usually like to make myself scarce. My kid is off to college now. What shall I do, some fiberglass work, change out a tire? I had nothing on my agenda for the whole day. Then a moment of brilliance... Get some crab cakes of course!
For those of you that know the Blues Brothers, "It's 106 miles to Chicago we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark and we're wearing sunglasses.. hit it!" In my case, it was 536 nm to W29, I had full tank of gas, no cigarettes, it wasn't dark, and I was wearing sunglasses and so I HIT IT! I had a great flight up at 11,500' just above the scattered clouds. I was chatting with a couple of local pilots after landing and tying down. One of them says, "Squaz." He recognized my airplane and it was non other than Ed Sealing. What a coincidence! He offered me a ride to the restaurant and even sat with me while I enjoyed some of the world's finest crab cakes! Thank you Ed!
In one day, I covered 1072 nm, logged a 7.0 on the Hobbs, and burned 63 g of AVGAS just to enjoy a great meal with RV friends and have a splendid time in my beloved N84JE. It doesn't get much better than that!

When's that cat coming out of the bag?...Yes, that's a real RV-6-7-9 firewall at 2000F.
Shoot, I’m based in Kansas and have been to Tangier twice. This post has me thinking it should be a third time soon…….
Jerry, did you hear me on the radio when you arrived back at home base Sunday evening, telling about your crab cake run?
Yeah, I can hear everybody in the pattern at Falcon...
Spent a chunk of my RV weekend on development work, but Sunday evening was loop and roll time.

We made it back in good time, Vlad. Had to rinse off the airframe in some precip, and tour the entire OBX on the way out - just to make sure it's still there
Going to mow the runway now so it will be ready for your arrival if you decide to head east.
