This accident happened just last month in SD. Todd Eslick was one of the Vanguard SQ Ethanol RV-3 demonstration team pilots. The NSTB report follows:

NTSB Identification: CEN09LA523
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Sunday, August 16, 2009 in Tea, SD
Aircraft: FROM HERE TO THERE PDQ INC RV-8, registration: N98aw
Injuries: 2 Fatal.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On August 16, 2009, at 1411 central daylight time, a From Here To There PDQ, RV-8, N98AW, collided with the terrain while performing aerobatic maneuvers 3 miles west of Tea, South Dakota. The airline transport rated pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The personal flight was operating under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local flight. The flight departed from the Skie-Lincoln County Airport (Y14), Tea, South Dakota.

A witness reported seeing the airplane perform and recover from a hammerhead-type maneuver. The witness reported that a second maneuver was performed from which the airplane did not recover. The witness who was one-half to three-quarters of a mile from the accident site, reported the engine sputtered and the power sounded like it went to idle as the airplane spun toward the terrain.

This was discussed a little when it happened, bt no one had any more facts than were quoted here. Yes, he was a member of the Vanguard Team. Until there are more facts brought out, there isn't much point in speculating.
