I'm currently using a couple of $5 canvas HF tool bags https://www.harborfreight.com/elect.../tool-bags/15-inch-canvas-tool-bag-32282.html and they work ok, but when I need to work on something I have to empty them out to find the right wrench, socket, screwdriver, etc.

Has anyone used one of those "tool roll bags" that they can recommend to get easy (easier?) access to the tools?

Amazon has a bunch, but thought I'd check here to see if anyone has a pirep.

Tool Bag

I actually prefer the zipper bag, but others may feel differently, perhaps as a function of what they include in their emergency kit.

For small stuff, e.g. hex wrenches, a few feet of coiled safety wire in different diameters, etc... if you go with a roll bag you need one with the zippered pockets, and you're back where you started--unable to see everything. I put those things in a side pocket. I also carry a small 1/4" drive socket set, in a molded case, as well as a roll of 2" tape. Neither of those would fit well in a roll-up.

If I need to work on something while "out", I can just pull a floor mat from the rear cockpit and lay everything out. Takes less than 30 seconds and I know just where to look for that "tool I just used 5 minutes ago". When done, they go back into the bag about a minute.

I started with the smaller canvas bag from HF and went to a canvas roll. Well I am back with the smaller canvas bag. It just holds so much more in a smaller space. I do have two small cargo straps that I lightly synch the bag (Like a bed roll or sleeping bag) to keep the contents from rattling in flight.

I do have a few pencil bags in the canvas bag that holds sockets as well as smaller spare parts and assorted hardware. I gave up on the roll because the slots were too big or too small for the tools that I carried in my travel kit.

These are only used for field repair. I have a more robust tool chest for working in the hangar.

You can make a roll up tool bag from an old Levi pant leg and stitch it to fit the tools that you need.

Not with me.... Cut the entire leg off. Cut the full length of the inseam, that will be the top of the flap. Lay the leg inside out, fold over 3/8 inch of material and stitch it. Fold leg lengthwise inside out and lay tools to check fit and figure amount of flap. Pin in place and stitch up the ends leaving the flap. Flip it good side out and place a tool, draw a line to make a pocket and stitch it..... Repeat. Roll it up from small end and secure with velcro or a rawhide shoe string. Forms and fits anywhere. Fold a rag and a Bandaid in with the tools, you will use them.
