G5 Version 2 Backup Battery

We issued 2 service bulletins today, relating to an incompatibility that exists between a limited subset of G5's, and Version 2 G5 backup batteries. Installations with Version 1 batteries are not affected. V2 batteries were released Q4 2020, so if your battery was shipped from us prior to that timeframe, you have a V1 battery.

In affected G5 installations, pressing the power button on the front of the G5 with the intention of powering the unit up on backup battery power only, will not result in the unit booting up. Providing aircraft power to the unit will result in a normal boot cycle. Once powered up, if aircraft power is later lost, affected G5's will continue to function normally on battery power.

SB 2149 provides suggested guidance to configure all G5's Automatic Power Off setting to On Ground Only. This will ensure that a G5 unit will never initiate a power-off countdown in flight.

SB 2151 serves to both identify the version number of your battery, and determine if those with V2 batteries are affected by the incompatibility. Affected units will need to be removed from the aircraft, and sent to us for a warranty MOD 1 upgrade. Please reach out to us at 1-866-854-8433 if you find that you have an affected installation.

Review of G5 Automatic Power Off configuration setting options (Page 8-55 of the G5 Installation Manual):

• Select Never to allow the G5 to continue to run on battery power, without interruption, any time ship power is lost.
• Select Always to initiate the external power lost countdown timer any time the G5 loses power. If the countdown is not acknowledged within the specified time limit, the unit will power down. This is the default setting.
• Select On Ground Only to initiate the external power lost countdown timer only when the G5 loses power and the airspeed is less than 20 kts.

Thanks,

Justin
