Introducing ?Tsamsiyu?

Phantastic! Tsam has to be the most stunning plane I have even seen. Show-winner for sure!

Bob

Louise & Paul,

Congrats on creating a beautiful piece of Art!!!

We need to get that behind the Skyvan in November!!!!

Incredible!!!!

Had a feeling this one was going to be special! Not disapointed.

Now I have to go to Osh. If you sneek up behind the old Cardinal with this thing, the Cardinal is going to think there is a bird of prey on it's tail. Might be the fastest it's ever moved

Grady did a wonderful job on your paint. I can't wait to se it in person, hopefully at LOE 2012. Grady painted the Texas Tech paint job on my RV-10 (first RV-10 he painted) and he is not only a great guy to deal with but does a great job.

Outstanding

Paul & Louise,

Sure hope you're going to be in Oshkosh. I'm thinking shoe in for trophies!!

Just Gorgeous!!

Did one person do all of that?

I have never seen a paint job ( that looks Good ) hide the check fairings so well.

It has changed the shape of the aircraft completely.

That is a really inspired Job.

So I have a question, who came up with the concept?

It makes me smile to see all the nice comments on the paint job. Thank you. Paul and I are both a little conservative on "fashion" choices so it has been re-assuring that so many people have give Tsam a thumbs up. You will be able to inspect her (her gender was determined at the Christening) in person at AirVenture (part of the RV parade on Monday). Those at the RV-1 stop in Lee's Summit next week and those hanging around KANE this weekend may also get an in-person preview (if weather cooperates).

The paint job is really an effort of four people in the GLO Custom paint shop. Brandon mostly did the dis-assembly and assembly, and I bet more. Another fellow (who I never met) did fiberglass finishing and made us look good. Grady shot the base coat, underside shadow gray, and clear top coats, and The Shark did all of the airbrushing. He is amazing and this is his first airplane (besides some tail- and nose-art).

James Cameron came up with the concept. I think Paul was the one to first mention it as a consideration for Junior. We both worked on fleshing out our vision. An artist friend of Paul in the Twin Cities (Gary Zahradka -- http://www.zahradka-art.com/) did a "proof of concept" model, and Shark made it real.

As for the NX number, Bob, we put that number on partly 'cause we thought it was cool and partly because it allowed us to avoid the "Experimental" label in the cockpit (where would we have put it????). Here's the pertinent reg:

Section 45.22
(b) A small U.S.-registered aircraft built at least 30 years ago or a U.S.-registered aircraft for which an experimental certificate has been issued under Sec. 21.191(d) or 21.191(g) for operation as an exhibition aircraft or as an amateur-built aircraft and which has the same external configuration as an aircraft built at least 30 years ago may be operated without displaying marks in accordance with Secs. 45.21 and 45.23 through 45.33 if:

We can't wait! It will be a fight for who gets the fly the mission. (Despite Paul's claim that I have first dibs on Tsam, he's taking it off on xc for the next week so we know how true THAT statement really was.)

Paul and Louise, "Tsam" is one amazing aircraft, between working on helping to restore the past (RV-1), and now with "Tsam" y'all will inspire the future, as many of the young children that see this fantastic aircraft will dream about learning to fly, and us old children to continue to pound rivets. And to think this all started on a horse back ride in the Big Bend Country. :D

So, the yellow spinner really was a red herring...?! ;)

Amazing work, and a stunning end product.

Hey Doug...how about some higher rez versions of these pics?

I can see them gracing the screens of many a VAF member's computers in days to come...including mine!

Paul & Louise, congratulations on having built a beautiful RV-3! Your concept was inspired, and the execution is outstanding. I hope you both enjoy many years of air beneath Tsam's wings!

And to the folks who brought the concept to life, you've created a masterpiece!

All concerned should be very proud!

Blue skies,

David

it is great warrior. time for battle in the sky. very nice.

i knew there was going to be some yellow in the paint scheme.

any pics of the under side? congrats!!!!!

That was a surprise!

Just logged in and got a morning wake-up before my coffee. Holy **** is that gorgeous. Totally not what I was expecting from a couple of techies. Can't wait to see it in person. That paint must most surely change your POH numbers.

RV-3 Paint.

Outstanding project from start to finish.
God bless you both, enjoy now.

WOW CREATIVE

You guys really pushed the envelope on that paint job! The blues and purples really pop agains the white. Its truly eye candy.

Dio Mio!

He who is not impressed with this work of art needs to have a checkup from the neckup.

Bella come la donna pi? bella! Congratulazioni!

WOW! Looks like someone came up with a paint scheme that out did Rosie.

I think someone needs to post a link so that many of us do not butcher the pronunciation of "Tsamsiyu".

After spending about 10-minutes, I cannot find it anywhere.

I was able to find this and it may help a few.

tsam (cam) n. /ˈtsam/, pl. sam wartsamsiyu (camsiyu) n. /ˈtsam.si.ju/, pl. samsiyu a warrior (si to do, to make)The above quote came from:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Na'vi

I hope someone can post a link to an MP3 that has the actual pronunciation.

I felt the same way watching the movie Avatar. The RV-3 is a flying metal sculpture... so why not?!

Congrats Louise & Paul! I can't wait to see Tsam in person. :D

I can only imagine the feeling you two must have had when the idea/concept for the paint scheme first started to coalesce. It must have been electric.

The paint scheme is stunning, but the concept you two came up with is several levels deep, and deserves much praise.

RV-3

Simply amazing looking airplane. Can't wait to see her at Oshkosh. Seeing it this year will give me the same joy as seeing the RV-1 last weekend in Stanley.

Congrats Paul and Louise, enjoy flying her.

Another good reason to go to Airventure this year

Well Folks

I think we're seeing '' THE OSHKOSH 2012 '' winner here without a doubt...

Magnifique....

Bruno

I was thinking the same thing. And I do plan to go this year. It's been a few years, lots of things have happened in my life (like heart surgery), and now I have another very good reason to see Tsam in person. :)

I also would like to hear it pronounced. If anybody comes up with a link to a pronunciation of "Tsamsiyu" please share it with us.

Vision realized

"Wow" seems like such an inadequate word yet I can't think of anything else. Paul, very apt description of the theme, nicely done. Every time I see you write about the RV-3 it makes me miss mine, darn.

You two had a vision for an aircraft, used what you've learned about aviation and RV building and combined that with discipline and hard work. Now you have the fully realized result. The payback is the tremendous sense of satisfaction you two must have right now. Congrats, you've earned it!

Now you have to get used to flying around in what must be the "ultimate ramp magnet".

Blue skies,

Just awesome!

Congrats Louise and Paul! In the end such an obvious choice of finishing for such an incredible beast. Thanks for pushing the envelope and being so bold:) Good luck with her. I'll see you in OSH.

Stunning!

Wow...I leave the computer for 24hrs and looks what shows up! Tsam is stunning! I can only imagine the hours of fun going over the possibilities. It's a wonderful thing when you get energized by an inspiration and then work it together. Congratulations on a fantastic outcome!

I also must thank you...the day I post a pic of Stella and worry that it might be a bit over-the-top for a lot of folks, you guys introduce Tsam and voila, all my worries evaporate:D It's a great day when two "extrovert" planes are introduced! It is about fun after all!

Are you guys going to be at Golden West? Work won't allow me to get to Oshkosh (never been yet:() but it would be great to meet all three of you in person.

All Best and CONGRATULATIONS!

The "LearnNavi.org" web site is down!

In my interest to learn about the Navi language developed for the movie, I went to this web site www.learnnavi.org and found this message:

LearnNavi.org is DOWN

We're currently having server issues and will be down for a little while...

What happened?

The server was restarted as part of a normal maintenance operation. The server powered down gracefully but refused to turn back on after the power cycle. Since the server was shutdown gracefully, we are very confident that all the data on the server is intact. The server is being shipped from the data center in Los Angeles to Mark? in Houston for repair.

When will it be fixed?

The server is on its way to Houston to be repaired. Estimated delivery is on Friday. We are also switching to a data center located in Dallas. The plan is to install the server in the data center on Saturday.

Is anything still online?

We're working to get some things back online using a different server until the original server is fixed. We currently have an IRC server up (irc.learnnavi.org:6667), and TeamSpeak is still up as well (ts.learnnavi.org).

I wonder if a lot of readers of the VAF forums hit the web site at the same time and caused this! No, we've got rivets to pound. We don't have time to learn the Navi language, do we? ;)

Lee's Summit

Tsam will be in Lee's Summit, eh? Hmmm ...

Since I'm taking off work on Tuesday to escort The One to IL, I've been toying with the idea of just taking the rest of the week off and continuing the Barnstorming Tour as a tag-along groupie. I'm sure I won't be the only one.

If I can see Junior ... Oops, Tsam ... in person at Lee's Summit, I might just do that. Even if I don't continue westward beyond that, it might just be worth the detour.

Again, Tsam looks GREAT! :)

Picks jaw up off floor.

That is gorgeous!! One of you better bring it to OSH. Promise you will, or we might just keep the RV-1 up on this side of the border :)

Jaw....

.....dropped to the floor!
Congratulations on one "heck" of a finished bird! Just Awesome!
I am sure "Tsam: flies as good as it looks!

Thoughts from reading all these comments?.

Thoughts from reading all these comments?.

? We are truly fortunate to have such an incredibly supportive community in the RV world. I am humbled by the reception ? and hope that I can take the time at fuel stops and the like to let folks see how much more incredible it is close up!
? No real need for a Neural interface ? once you fly a -3, you understand that it is already there?.
? We told Shark that we wanted the face to say ?I am going to protect my rider no matter what ? don?t mess with me, I won?t mess with you??.I think he got it. Would YOU mess with that?! 
? Award Winner? Well, when I read the judging standards, judges aren?t supposed to let flashy paint distract them from the real virtues of a well-built airframe. We built her to fly, and we enjoy the look ? if she gets an award, that?s nice ? but not required.
? Yup Doug ? Galveston in November ? YOU figure out how to line it up for the best shot!
? Everyone who was predicting the paint kept focusing on that yellow spinner ? I?d like to say it was clever mis-direction, but that was the color of the airplane the (very slightly used) prop came off of?.
? Milt ? irayo !
? Belly Pictures ? Here?s a partial shot, to give you an idea?

? As Louise mentioned ? if the weather works out, Tsam may be in Minnesota for the weekend, then she says she wants to meet this RV-1 we keep talking about. But counting on the weather in the Midwest? We?ll see?.

Are you guys going to be at Golden West? Work won't allow me to get to Oshkosh (never been yet:() but it would be great to meet all three of you in person.

Well, I don't think Paul and I will both fit in Tsam for a flight to Golden West but I am toying with the idea of attending with Tsam if everything fell into place (e.g., work load, weather, getting Paul to return the plane so I can fly it...;)).

Well done

Very, very nice you guys. Can't wait to see it in person. Hope I can get
through the crowd it will gather at OSH.

Funny how the knee jerk thought I had was "bad a$$". even funnier since those words aren't even in my vocabulary. Only question I have is which of those photos is going on THE calendar?

Congrats on the completion of an awesome steed!

When I saw the "eyes", I immediately thought about taming those "rides" and went and looked up images. Wondered if you would "go there" and indeed you did. Full tilt. In a wonderful way!

May you be in command of your portion of the skies whenever you "gitty-up"!

Beautiful - just beautiful

Just wanted to add my respects to this. What a nice looking bird. I was going to ask how you set it up to create "the bond," but it looks like that may have already been addressed.

I did want to point out, however, that when I look back at your first flight experiences, it seems that she did hold true to the events in the movie when she tried to "do you in" with that little fuel selector valve problem. But you overcame that quite nicely, and now it appears that the bond has been made.

I guess I am now wondering who will come out with "Last Shadow?" What a formation flight that would be.....

Congrats to the both of you and I can't wait to see her at OSH.

This is definitely my new desktop wall paper for a good long while.....

Great!

Great work! Would make an awesome computer background/wallpaper.

Searching for "Tsamsiyu" shows this thread within the top 10 in several search engine results.

Great work of ART!!!!

.......Alway's love it when someone (two) put some original thought into their project. Now I'll suggest matching flight suits to top it off! (the lime green shirt didn't match) ;) Great Job!

Beautiful...

Can't wait to see the plane (and the builders :) in person at
OSH. Hopefully we can get some -3's parked together in HBP
to show off the latest in "old-school" RVs.

Congrats on finally getting "finished"!

I guess I am now wondering who will come out with "Last Shadow?" What a formation flight that would be.....

Once I knew that "Junior's" name was Tsamsiyu I immediately thought about Toruk (Last Shadow in Navi's language).
Would be hard for me to do some formation flying except if I cross the atlantic ocean.. Hmmm... let's build some Aux tanks. :D

Random thoughts

I join the WOW crowd.

What I have been thinking:

Grady has a new background photo for his next batch of business cards.

Between Tsam and Stella, Doug has a couple months of VAF calandars ready to roll. As does Vans for the 2013 calandar.

I wonder what sort of response Doug would get to a poster sized copy for sale alongside the VAF caps and t-shirts? I can see lots of new wall decorations in workshops all across the fruited plains..
