Vic has a very good article in the recent September issue of Sport Aviation magazine dealing with engine start problems. He covers a wide range of issues and has some very good advice for carbureted and electronic ignition systems, as well as hot start & cold start techniques.
For guys new to your airplane, the article offers sound advice on solving start problems. For us old-timers.... we've pretty much settled in on what works best in ours. Another good source of info related to start issues is Dan Horton (DanH) right here on vansairforce.net.
