Aileron hangar rash

I was working on my aileron brackets today and unfortunately damaged the nose fairing on one corner of the aileron.

I assume it’s not just cosmetic despite being outside the main airfoil portion. How should I go about repairing it?

I would consider building a new aileron. Not very expensive and they are easy to build. You could almost certainly re-use the counterbalance, and maybe some other parts.

That’s an option I had considered. Would putting together a pre-punched aileron kit be faster or about the same as playing with match drilling blind holes on a blank nose skin?

Another factor with that would be if I need to build two ailerons that way. I have .016 skins right now and I understand it that modern kits moved to .024. Would I need to replace both for balance reasons?

Wouldn't try to give you a definitive answer on either. Check with builder support on the .016 vs. .024 question?

Can you bend it back? These parts are repairable unless you are looking to get a Lindy

I have an email in to the Mothership with this question. I agree on the surface it looks possible to bend it back and just stop drill any cracks (if there are any).

I dinged mine also. Bent it back and finished with micro75AA30C4-8753-4199-AB43-97F1CDCD2A36.jpg ballons. Still flies straight. Unless you know where to look repair is invisible

Official answer from the mothership is to build a new aileron. The nose skin (A-402) is no longer offered as a blank for non-prepunched kits, and as such they recommend just building a new pre-punched aileron rather than trying to form and drill a new nose skin.

I find that the mothership tech support will always recommend building a new part, most likely related to CYA

It won’t take long to build a new one. I know it’s not ideal, but neither is the hangar rash. I’m sure you’ll be pleased you built the new one once it’s done. Sorry to hear of the damage.
