RV 12 or 9A to see up close

ntylerative

I'm New Here
I am currently a student pilot. I hope to finish up my private certificate here in the next couple of months and am starting to think about buying an airplane. I am interested in both the RV 12 and RV 9A. From researching planes these models seem like they would be a good fit for a 1st airplane for a new private pilot?? I live in Tyler. I would like to see these models up close and visit with the owner on what their experience has been like. Wondering if there is someone in my area (or even Dallas/Ft Worth area) that would be interested in showing me their airplane?

I have no experience with the 12, but I think the -9A in particular would be an excellent first airplane for a low-time private pilot. I don't know how your insurance company of choice would see it, but you might be able to get an idea by giving one of the RV specialists at Gallagher a call. We're at opposite ends of the country so I can't help you much locally. I'm happy to help any way I can, as I'm sure many or most RV owners would be.

Thanks for the advice!

The RV-9A has considerably better performance than an RV-12. I've never flown an RV-9A but the RV-12 has delightful handling.

The RV-12 would probably be cheaper to operate. The acquisition cost would be very roughly about the same for either.

Although most of my experience has been in different airplanes, I'd think that if a two-seater meets your needs, either would make fine first airplanes. The RV-9A would be better if you were planning on doing some traveling but honestly, the RV-12 is faster than my first airplane, a Cessna 170B, which I flew to both coasts and Oshkosh while making numerous trips. You'll get there.
