...getting this week's thread started. Rain all day in DFW Friday, outlook better for the weekend (fingers crossed).

Nashville

We went to John C. Tune airport near Nashville this week (26-28 Oct) for the 41st anniversary of the 160th SOAR. It was great seeing old friends and making many new ones.

What a great little traveling machine! We flew IFR both ways and got around 1:30 of actual IMC.

Great flying weather in PA

Friday flight for lunch and Saturday flight for breakfast. I think we are on the backside of peak fall colors.

Oh my the Delaware Gap picture is impressive thanks Governor! Missing that place...

Nothing newsworthy in the Wild West. Flew to Saratoga WY to soak in hot springs and back. Popped only one helium balloon over a friendly ranch they released 20+ need to work on precision flying :D 2.3 hours logged.

Our first Day Trip

My wife and I went on our first day trip since I got my license. We went from Mason MI to Holland MI - about 100 miles. We got to fly over the shore of Lake Michigan and the beaches and the little Holland Town.

It is only the second flight my wife has had in a small plane and I am so glad she enjoys it! Both flights have been in real smooth conditions and I will keep it that way until she gets a bit more used to flying. I dont want to ruin a good thing!

She isnt ready for lessons but we got a couple folding bikes and will head to Boyne Mountain this week and maybe Mackinac Island next week.

As you can see in the picture, I married up 46 years ago!

Fun Flight

I finally had the opportunity to take my youngest daughter up for her first flight in N777RV. She didn't fall asleep this time like she used to 17 years ago. ;)

I took Martin (RV-10 builder) for a flight down to Brown Field (KSDM) EAA chapter 14's open house (66th year anniversary) and got lunch there.

Sunday fuel run.

Got in a quick fuel run to KXBP before working on the wife’s car some (gas smell….still looking).

Trees turning here in Texas:

Testing the PIVOT iPad case in flight for the first time - was using a phone there for years. I like the iPad better (shows traffic bigger and I enjoy digging around the airport info pages in a larger format while enroute).

Big blue Texas skies a day after rain:

Lot of people had the same idea as me Sunday:

On the way back got a yellow warning from a heavy climbing out of KAFW (probably Amazon plane):

The heavy:

Bumpy flight, but the first RV time off the surface in 19 days. Mental gyros recalibrated…..sure felt nice to be flying in an RV!!!!

No flying this weekend. (Yes, I finally got the prop back from OH after 8 weeks in late Sept) Working through the 50 hr MTC requirement on the SMA engine-oil change/ fuel filter change/ and other items.

Woke up early, and got to the airport a bit before sunrise, to fly my Bonanza to Pahrump, NV (74P).

Once there, I switched airplanes and got into my (new to me) RV-4 and flew down to Jean, NV (0L7). Did a landing there, and taxied back to the runway and began to head back to 74P.

Had a pretty good view of Vegas off the right wing as I headed back (picture won't do it justice)

Approaching Pahrump, NV I reflected briefly on how different the landscape becomes after flying just a short ways away.

Landed back in 74P and put the RV back in the hangar and fueled up the Bonanza and headed back to my hangar in California.

Overall, a pretty great day of flying!!

IFR training in the RV-6.
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/VHSOL/history/20221030/0415Z/YSBK/YSBK

Climb via Bankstown-8 SID to 3000, expect 6000 after handoff to Departures. Watched a rescue helicopter contour-flying the Shoalhaven River valley west of Bowral, absolutely certain the pilot was humming the "Airwolf" theme the whole time. BUNGO FOUR runway 35 arrival into Canberra, received vectors for the ILS-Z 35 to minimums. Followed missed approach instructions from Canberra Tower to climb to 5000 and track direct Goulburn. Hand-flew the RNAV-Z runway 04 approach from the GZBWB transition at Goulburn, climb to 7000 during the missed approach, watching gliders thermalling on the slopes north of Towrang as I passed. Returned to Bankstown for an OCTA descent and a visual approach from TWRN.

I can't tell you how much i'm enjoying this stuff.

It was VH-SOL's first-ever ILS, so it also served as a shakedown for the avionics systems I installed last year. G3X Touch autopilot, GNS430W navigator. It all worked like it says on the box, deeply satisfying feeling to watch it capture the glideslope and follow it all the way down the chute.

We'll go to Nowra later and hand-fly more ILS's.

Canberra's missed approach point is 201 feet AGL, which is inside the runway threshold. Absolutely ridiculous to think you can go down that far in IMC.

No photos, I was a bit busy.

Had my best landing in my still relatively new to me -8, followed by my worst landing.

<sigh>

Always learning, kids. Going out tomorrow early before Tuesday's predicted storm to wash the stink off.

Flew around locally and very briefly considered a landing on the Nimitz as we happened to be in the air when it was coming by. And I figured I'd only get one go at it whether I actually landed or not:D. Got a couple pics but no place to host them so can't link here. I've given up on keeping any photos on the internet.

Today it was severe clear in the Los Angeles area.

Great flying weekend! A Young Eagle Flight saturday morning followed by a dinner flight to Hagerstown, MD with my wife. Sunday we flew to Smith Mountain Lake Airport in Virginia. Airport rental car only $20 bucks so we drove around and had a great lunch, complete with live music and football on the TV's. Lunch spot was Beacon Seafood Pub in Moneta, VA. Altogether a fantastic flying weekend!
