R-cubed #4 at the air races

Greg Arehart

Well Known Member
I hereby volunteer Guccidude's place yet again for another R-cubed this year. Will happen on Saturday night (September 17) beginning as soon as the races have shut down for the day. Here's the map:

Would be good to get some idea of how many might be coming. No reservations required, no commitment - we just want an idea of how much food & drink to have available.

cheers,
greg

Of course I'll have a hangar there now, and won't make the races again this year. Damnitall!

Great news Greg - the R3 BBQ has been a great way for us to get to know future neighbors!

I just got notified that my media credentiuals got approved for this year's races, so I am guessing we're going to have to come out and join the party once again.

I will be back. Three people total. Thanks for the invite Greg and to all of you who have been putting this on.

Add two!

The wife and I will be there for our first Races. Looking forward to the races and the BBQ!

Enjoyed meeting you last year

Enjoyed meeting fellow Rvers last year and my friend John and I can't wait to see the races again. Hopefully a bit less wind this year! 2 More for the BBQ if there is room.

Cheers Jeremy

We are planning on flying daily to Reno area to join the show. Any idea which airport would be the easiest/best/cheapest to land and then get to the show?

Thanks in advance

Where is a good motel with a restaurant/bar to stay at...not a Super 8!

Thanks,

Grand Sierra, Silver Legacy, Peppermill. Casino/resorts. Haven't looked for race weekend but they usually have rooms for $50.

There are a thousand hotels to chose from, if it's not a casino, stay away from non-chain brand names. Some of the older places down town can be pretty old and shadey.

Mehrdad,

Easiest is going to be Reno. I don't know what the situation will be there for tiedowns and cost. Next simplest will be Carson City. I mention these two because you are likely to be able to get a rental car at either. Beckworth is reasonably close (half hour drive or so), but usually full of airplanes and no rental cars (that I know of). Spanish Springs (just east) is a dirt strip, but in reasonable condition. They likely will have some space to tie down, and you might get enterprise to come get you there. Truckee is about 45 minutes drive and will also have rental cars. There are several other airports in the Carson City area as well.

I actually suggest that the simplest (and possibly cheapest) solution would be to fly into Reno or one of the other local airports, stay at a casino and take their shuttle to RTS for the races. I don't know for sure which ones have shuttles, but its probably on their website or the Air Race website. If you come to one of the other airports, one of us locals could probably arrange a ride to downtown and back (and the other airports are going to be much cheaper tiedown). Staying downtown and using the shuttle will eliminate the cost of flying each day (but of course that might be part of the fun for you), and eliminate the cost and hassle of finding parking at the races. Downside is less mobility.

Let me know if I can help or provide more info.

greg

Greg,
Thanks for all the info.
When I called one of Reno FBOs, they mentioned $40 tiedown fee for day use which is very steep for me so we are hoping to land else where and drive. Also, shuttle seemed to be available only Thr-Sun and did not start at the airport which would have left getting to the hotels on our own.

So, right now I am thinking of renting a car or possibly stay over night unless some other arrangements is possible but flying in is part of the fun for us. If others need a lift, maybe we can arrange it so to help out.

We found out a little trick last year about rental cars and Carson City. the enterprise franchise in town set up a desk at Carson City airport for the week, and that made them an "airport location". They charged about three times as much if you picked up the car there than if you went into town and picked it up at their regular location. We happened to be approached by some RV builders as we were tucking the airplane away, and they gave us a lift to eh "in town" location to pick up the car - otherwise, I would have called a cab - or even walked the three miles!

I called Max at Spanish Springs, N86 he said he'd get us a ride to the Nugget or Enterprise has delivered cars too in the past. 100 LL is 5.75 compared to 6.99 in Reno plus 40 tie down fee. I' m going into Spanish Springs Fri morning around 9AM, maybe we can share rides to town or races?

We are going to rent a car and can give lifts to any one that needs a ride from the airport, if we can coordinate it.

My wife and I along with a few friends will be in Reno from monday until saterday morning. We wont be able to make the BBQ obviously but we'd like to meet some RV people during the week if able. I'll just keep an eye on this thread I guess.

Tally so far

I count about 42 possibles as of tonight. Looking forward to good friends again this year!

cheers,
greg

I'll be there in spirit! My old man will probably show up.

Landfill,

Where in the world (literally) are you posting from? Safe travels...we will hoist a few for you!

Very excited that so many RV folks are headed to Reno! Been heads-down flying off Phase I for a couple mods and getting the paperwork sqared away (all good now), and prepping for race week. Just wanted to check in and say hi, before heading in to race registration!

Mark Frederick, Greg Nelson (the Reno Rocket men) and Dave "RoDoc" Leonard, Steve Senegal and I (the RV reps) are just about ready. The Sport Class guys are calling us the "Metal Mafia", and Mark has stickers with that moniker made up for us!

So please come on out and cheer the "RV/Rocket Metal Mafia", and then let's party at the R3 BBQ! I posted the (semi-pirated) pic below on another related thread, but thought I'd duplicate it here so all can see where to come look for us (we'll be in the Sport Class hangar across from the big RARA hangar...it has a light red box around it in the pic). Below the pic, I've posted a schedule of Sport Class practice, heat and finals races. Lots of racing in other classes all around that schedule, of course...but those are the times we may be out there.

I hope everyone has a safe trip to Reno, and looking forward to seeing everyone here! We are meeting several folks in Minden today, and flying a bit of a mass arrival, with reps from all classes together (Formula, BiPlane, T-6, Sport and Unlimited). 1600 PDT arrival ETA at Stead today (9/9), for anyone already in town.

See y'all next week!

Cheers,
Bob

Greg,
I see the TFR is between 6 AM and 8 PM. Can we fly in outside those hours? I don't see any NOTAM or rule against it. Where do all the ramp planes move to during the races?
Thanks!

Yes there will be a donation jar - gotta help pay for my engine rebuild:D

Yes you can fly into RTS outside those hours, but there is no place to park (unless you have a hangar) so it is a bit of a moot point. Actually the TFR should expire at the end of the last race of the day, which can be earlier than 6 pm. All ramp airplanes are either parked at center field or the owners move them to RNO (free tiedowns for RTS airplanes during this week!).

Yep, we have room for three more (or more than that). I do not know of any 12s on the field. Those two-digit numbers are too big for us simple folk.

cheers,
greg

With respect to field ops, what I gleaned from the in-brief today is the following:

Tower controlled operations begin at 0600 (133.3 tower and ground)
Race Control has control 0745 to 1700 (133.3, ground is on 127.55 during the racing schedule 0745-1700)
Tower resumes ops 1700 to 2000 (133.3 tower and ground)
From 2000 to 0600, the field is non-towered, CTAF 122.7

The TFR is in effect 0600-2000 each day (expanded from last year Greg), and per the ASOS tonight, the field is now closed to all transient and non-participating aircraft. As Greg said, unless you are hosted in a hangar, there really is no place to park. If you have a hangar sponsor, you can get in outside of the TFR hours (though it may be dark), or may be able to arrange an arrival via the NOTAM issuer before or after the race schedule).

Just want to put this out, as I don't want to see anyone get in hot water...and we really hope many will continue to plan to come to the races! If you're flying in, please watch the PM weather. The monsoon pattern has been bringing in PM thunderstorms over the mountains, and it rained at the field after 5pm today. Safe travels all!

Greg, several folks have come over and asked about the R3 BBQ over the last few days...I think it's gonna be bigger than ever! See you there...and I'll have some green for the donation jar too (since I'm a deadbeat and can't help much this year! ;))

Good practice run today. The Rockets are running really fast, especially that Frederick fella, so I need to step it up (and need some RVers out there screamin' loud!). The RV-S8 and Rotary RV-6 didn't run today, but should be out there soon! Qualifying starts tomorrow!

See y'all there!

Cheers,
Bob

Please RSVP for 4 more. I would love to meet some fellow builders!

Also, if anyone needs any information, or a ride to the races from CXP, Carson City give me a call. There may be hangar space available also. Sorry for the late reply. Just found out I will not be out of town this weekend.

Can I take you up on that offer for next year???

Too late to change my plans this year.

Sure. Give me a call. I am at the races today, and the rest of the week. Could show you around after the races if you want.

Greg, Please add 2 more burgers to the list. Looks I have the weekend clear..................

Thank You!

We still have food, people are still in town, so the executive decision is to go forward with the BBQ - at least it will give folks a venue to discuss the tragedy. Tentatively ~5 pm at Guccidude's hangar. No need to reconfirm whether you are coming or not - we'll just deal with whoever shows up. If there are folks out there that need a ride (not sure if shuttles are going to be running, but I doubt it) please text me 775-762-7550 or email (arehart[at]unr.edu) and I'll try to arrange transport. This assumes that we will have access to the west end hangars, which I believe will be the case. If we have no access, then I will post again here tomorrow afternoon, and we'll probably try to do something at my house.

Please pass the word if you know anyone else who was planning to attend but may not see this message.

greg

Will try to make it

Local blood bank asking for donations.
If anyone needs transportation, or assistance with housing, hangar space, or anything else, please contact me. 760-964-9240.

I am sorry for all the victims, and sorry for all those that witnessed it. Words cannot describe the casualties.

Would not even have an appetite for the rest of the weekend, please...

Then it would be the right thing for you to not attend Darrel.

For many that are here in town, they might need a bit of catharsis to talk about what has transpired. I have been through many fatal avation mishaps, and many more tragedies as a 25-year firefighter. Getting togetehr with like-minded individuals after a tragedy is not out of the box from a stress debriefing standpoint.

Would not even have an appetite for the rest of the weekend, please...

I just want to say, it is not about the food for me. I need to be around people, and talk about what happened. Everyone handles life changing events in a different way. If you need to head straight home to family, I understand. If you need to meet with some friends, and get some moral support, that may be a good idea.

I hope to see some of you tomorrow. If stead is closed down, I offer our hangar at CXP for the same BBQ and greet. Plenty of room. We can help others with logistics if needed. Call with any questions.

Joel 760-964-9240

Thanks for moving forward, Greg and team

I greatly appreciate you folks moving forward with the gathering. I, too, have been through several traumatic tragedies in my caving career and getting together with your community of friends is essential to a healthy recovery. We were unlucky to have missed today and we have other activities ahead this week, but even so, I crave the companionship of my aviation family right now.

So, blood donation at 9:15 tomorrow morning and a group hug at 5 pm.

To each their own...

I would spend my time with the folks that are facing the loss... comforting them in their time of need. JMHO Have fun eating BBQ.
