GNS430W "OBS not available"

Upon booting my GNS430W, everything works on the test page, including the CDI displayed on my AFS5400T and control of the OBS value from the CRS knob on the EFIS.

But when the GNS430W is fully booted, while the CDI continues to work fine, I press its OBS button it gives me the message "OBS not available".

My preliminary conclusion is that the communication between the AFS5400 and the GNS430W is good, but there is something wrong inside the GNS430W or with its configuration.

Does that sound correct and if so, does anyone know which GNS430W configuration setting would cause this please?

From the 430W Pilot's Guide...

OBS not available — The OBS mode could not be
activated, because 1) no destination waypoint has been
selected, or 2) the GPS receiver cannot currently determine
its position.

How does this square with what you are seeing?

Brian,

i will head back to the airport in the morning, pull the airplane out of the hangar, select a waypoint and try again.

Just started IFR training and learning to use the OBS button.

Thank you!

Brian,
The need for a GPS position and waypoint was indeed my issue. Duh!

Thanks again.

Awesome! Good luck with the training. The instrument rating is, IMHO, the most useful to have...
