Match Drilling Wing Spar

So, How did you guys do this?

Document RV-14, Page 13-02, step 4 states, "Match-drill #40 the W-0009A Wing Box J-Channels - Long and W-0009B Wing Box Channels - Short to the flanges of the the W-00006-L Main Spar Assembly using the row of .094 (2.4 mm) diameter holes nearest the spar flange edges as drill guides. See Figure 2."

Van's sends a beautifully assembled and anodized wing spar, and then instructs us to put a drill bit spinning at 4k rpm in several holes in that wing spar so that we can match drill a cheap piece of J0Channel? Seriously?

All recommendations for how to do that without ruining the anodized coating would be appreciated!

It's not a big deal. We agonized over this just recently (for a -10, though). Just get to it. You'll be fine.

Good luck!
Mike

The same holes used to match drill will also get machine countersunk to accept skin dimples so if your concern is about loosing the anodizing you will be touching up with protective primer when you prime the bare material in teh countersinks.
And you don't have to use 4K RPM drill;)
