RV-8 True Airspeed

Well Known Member
Looking to get a idea of what others with a RV-8 have seen True Airspeed at 8K feet wide open throttle?

Constant speed?

Thanks for the reply, I guess I should also ask everyone if they are a O360, carb or fuel injected and also fixed pitch or constant speed?

177 KTAS at 8,000' according to my Phase 1 test records. All levers fully forward and bending!

178 kts TAS at ~8000MSL.

ECI Titan IO-360 with 9.2:1 compression and cold air induction system (forward facing inlet), Van's "smooth" cowl with snorkel intake.
Hartzel Blended Airfoil CS prop.

Fixed pitch

I have a tired (5000hr, 600SMOH) O-360A1A, carbureted, sterba wood prop. Wide open I see about 202mph(176kts), at 8000'. Leaned out,(ROP) and 2450 rpm, I see about 185-188mph on a tad over 8gph.

I have seen as high as 182 KTAS ROP on 9.5-10 gph, verified with GPS . If I'm in economy mode I'll see low to mid 170's KTAS on about 8.5 pgh. If I lean much from there the TAS starts dropping off pretty fast, and I don't like going slow :D. I have an O-360-A1A with a Whirlwind 200 RV cs prop, and Slick mags.

Last time I flew my 8 with all levers full forward this it what I got:D

TAS: 188 kts
IAS: 174 kts
Altitude: 4050 ft
OAT: 18 C or 64,4 F

My 8 is standard build by plans, I have a Lycoming YIO-360-M1B with Hartzell prop.

10 MPH Slow?

Here are my speeds, Looks to be about 10MPH slow?

8600 msl 8000agl. / 2500 RPM = 157 IAS 185 TAS
" " / 2670 RPM = 167 IAS 193 TAS (2670 RPM was MAX)

Not sure why, Superior O360 A1A with rollers everything cordinated no Rudder tab or wedge needed no heavy wing. Sensenich 72FM8S9-1 (85) prop.

Any ideas were to look for the 10 MPH?:(

Do you have a plenum? Pressure recovery wheelpants? Thost last two things should get you about 8 or 9 more mph if you don't have those already.

Both cowling and wheel pants are stock Vans.

I was thinking specifically of the plenum. Is Van's selling these along with the cowlings now? Most report about 5 mph by adding the plenum just under the cowling.

Sounds like you have a well rigged plane. It should be screaming past Van's specs if the engine is timed right and everything good there.

Do you remember the OAT when you did your numbers?

OAT was 82F, Plane is rigged well, runs well and has good compressions with only 136 TTE.

I flew to Portland this weekend and had my 8 at 8500', WOT, but the RPM dialed back to 2400. I was 100 ROP and my TAS was at 175 kts.

Some intial readings from down low. I have IO-360-A1A with 10:1 pistons spinning an Hartzell with 7666 blades.

Flying with my RV-4 buddy in tow (180hp c/s), all levers full forward I showed 212 mph true at 2500'.
I haven't done any calibration yet, but it did roughly match the readings from the -4 on my wing - I was actually pulling away.....;)

I see roughly 165-170 KTAS near gross at 8000 with my fixed pitch at 2700 RPM. Density altitude where I fly is almost aways well above MSL. I can't go to full throttle because 2700 is red line. My prop is the Sensenich Vans sells for O360. My engine is a Superior IO-360.

Sure you can............ Just don't do forever..............

I have been through this dilema myself.....slowest RV10 in the world:(

Then Kevin Hortons wise words kicked in.

Take your plane out and fly a GPS box and work out what your REAL TAS was, and while flying the box keep your plane rock steady straight and level so whatever power setting you are using for the test yields the same IAS. Smooth air helps. Calculate your TAS or from your EFIS.

Compare your calculated TAS with the GPS box TAS.

You may find the static is being positively pressurised giving you a lower IAS and a lower TAS.

You may find the opposite. With some experimenting with rivets glued to my statics I went from -9knots to +6 knots, in the end I ended up with this....

calibrated airspeed

Can't emphasize the importance of calibrating your static source enough. I went through LOTS of alterations to the static source before I had consistent readings from fast cruise to slow flight. All are now consistently reading 3 knots faster than actual and I called it good enough and documented my calibrated airspeed. But it took a LOT of testing and reshaping to get it that close.

You could EASILY be off by 10 kts and not know it. When I first tested it was off by 15kts, but on the fast side. I knew it was too good to be true:D but it sure made it easy to bite the bullet and fix it.

Procedures are well described elsewhere and +1 for Kevin Horton's terrific contributions to our community for making his flight testing resources available on his website.

East static port calibration method:
Make a low pass (@ cruise speed) at your home field at maybe 50' AGL. compare your indicated alt with what you know it should be. Make the appropriate adjustments to your port until you see field elev + 50.

Dunno about the low pass brouhaha, but this could be another explanation for doing that maneuver.

Carry on!
Mark

except that you will not know you are at exactly 50ft therefore introducing additional error. You can't use the instrument itself as truth data since it is being tested. Besides flying an AGL reference doesn't help even if you knew you were exactly at 50FT AGL throughout the test unless you know the ground reference from start to finish is at the same MSL. If the runway has slope and you maintain exactly 50ft agl (somehow) you'll still invalidate the test.

I have a standard Vans ASI hooked up to the standard pitot/static source.

Next to it is a Dynon D10A hooked up to the same static source but its own pitot tube.

The Dynon always indicates 2-3 knots less than the ASI and it also computes TAS. As near as can be determined with GPS data, the Dynon is accurate to within a knot or two.

The static pressure source with this RV-7A seems to be OK. I did have a major problem with static pressure in another airplane but not this one.

These are the RV-8/8A speeds recorded in SARL since 2007

This is not a perfect fit to your question but it does provide a lot of historical max speed data on RV-8s without altitude restrictions. The RV Red class has 320 cu. in. RV Blue Class is limited to 360 cu. in. and the RV Gold can have 390 cu. in. You will note that John Huft flew in the Blue and Gold Classes. It is the same airplane and engine (IO 360), he just felt sorry for the rest of us Blues and decided to take on the 390s in the Gold Class.

Bob, we all love ya' buddy, but every time anyone asks about airspeed you post a list of groundspeeds....

My RV-8 thinks it's a 4

Just so there is a different sounding voice in the crowd ...

RV-8 with carburated 150hp O-320 and AD fixed pitch wood prop ...

My recent tests gave me 158-160kts 8000' ROP at 7.4-7.6 gph

(most of x-country flights are at 9.5k-11.5k and I get 152-155kts tas at 7.2gph)

Interesting thread. Flew awhile today and wanted to see how my ship measured up.

IO-360 A1B6D
3 blade Mccauley
Sam James Cowl and Plenum

8000' msl
22.5" mp
2500 rpm
182.48 knots true

My machine is turbo normalized, with the third lever pushed in slightly to pull 25 squared:

25"mph
2500 rpm
190.3 knots true
10.2 gph/186 deg oil/340 deg cht/1300 egt

FWIW,
Mark
