Default Air leaking from both ends of hose

I've finally bought my own compressor and hooked everything up but I'm getting air leaking out of both ends of the hose. The problem is that the connectors are screwing 100% into the ends.

I'm ignorant. Is this normal and something that is fixed with grease or something or should I expect the connectors to screw perfectly into the hose?

Did you wrap threads with silicone tape?

Sounds like the hose has flare fittings or something not tapered. National Pipe Thread (NPT) won't bottom, even without teflon tape.
