The leak down test is a very poor tool for determining many things, but before we had borescopes that were cheap and EMS data to examine it was all we had.

One bad leak down is not a disaster. It may point you at looking for EMS data to confirm, it may point you to clogged up oil control rings, or it may be a bit of combustion deposit on a face.

Do them hot, do them through the LOWER plug only, and use the result in combination with a borescope and EMS data. The borescope and EMS data being the primary ones, for valves, and the leak down for rings.

Ironically it is because that is the advice of one of Australia's leading engine shops.

Why you ask? Well they have had over the years a number of cylinders pulled and sent to them from workshops around the country with a poor leak down result, only to discover a tiny chunk of deposits from around the top plug has broken away and by sheer fluke the valve has been in just the right position to catch it.

They get the cylinder and it leaks like a sieve. They take the valve out (crud is on the plug side of the valve) clean the surfaces drop it back in and it seals log a frogs bottom!

Particles do not fall up.

May never happen to you, but it does happen.
