I believe checker board rudders add an extra 5 knots to your cruise performance (Maybe the more blocks the faster )

Checkerboard rudders help, but lots of red in the paint scheme helps to go even faster.

3" squares on mine.

The builder of my RV-6 did exactly the same thing... got a spray mask made from vinyl at a local sign shop.

And if they are put on as diamonds you get an extra kt up to 6kts. Do the whole VS & rudder and it's up to 7kts!

Thanks!

The builder said it is Acry Glo solid Cabernet Red, a color that's supposedly been discontinued but can still be special-ordered from S/W for extra $$$ . In subdued lighting conditions it does look maroon, but in bright direct sunlight it definitely looks more red than maroon.

I shamelessly (with permission) stole Kyle's rudder paint ideas... Hand masked the hard way. Don't forget to put some on the flaps too...

I put 'em on all three of my rudders; improves roll rate and crosswind handling characteristics.
