Messed up the toolbox project
Everything was going fine. All parts identified and cut/deburred. The two ends went on just fine. One side the dimples were just a little bit shallow so I really wacked on the cframe for the other end which made the rivets fit better.
Then it was on to drilling the back hinge. I read it a little too quick then basically made assumptions rather than reading twice. I clamped the box hinge on the inside with the eyelets resting against the top edge and towards the rear rather than clamping on the outside with the top of the eyelets flush with the top of the edge and towards the rear. And I drilled all the holes. I wondered for a little bit why Van's would design it so poorly for hole edge distance. Then I started fitting the lid hinge. I reread and then looked at other pictures and also referred back to the plan diagram. The holes are about 3/32 from the bottom of the hinge rather than centered.
Why doesn't the hinge piece show in the picture... ahh.... because it's supposed to be on the outside... I thought it looked better on the inside and didn't think it would be mounted on the backside.
For a little bit I thought I could salvage it. It doesn't have to actually fly so I kept trying to see if I could adjust the lid hinge. It would work barely. It would put the lid rivet line closer to the eyelets and wouldn't have the lid rest fully on the side pieces.
But I know I would know.
So unless someone has 18" of one hinge piece MS20257-3 near Sacramento I guess I order a piece along with my next practice kit.
I have some MS20257-2 but that a little less in width and leaves me in the same situation.
So far I've built one EAA wing/control surface project with my partner in the sheetmetal class, then another at home. Each turned out fairly well. Good lessons learned and I only had to drill out one rivet on my own attempt.
This darn toolbox project seemed on the easy side but I can see you need to reread 2x or more and read ahead.

This is exactly what these practice kits are for
One suggestion, go to Aircraftspruce.com and order some 2024T3 of a couple of thicknesses and you can pick up some rivets too if you need them. That's a good way to practice stuff like dimpling and riveting technique... Not to mention drilling them out. You'll need scrap pieces when you start anyway.

I won't even show anyone my toolbox! It looks like ****, the hinge binds so bad I can't hardly open it. The side looks like a stop sign in the country.
After I visited a couple guys who were building and they showed me the tricks, I actually got to where I can rivet without freaking myself out or having to make another call to Vans for supplies.
Get some scrap aluminum and just practice. Even the cheap stuff from HD will work to try pressure changes and how to hold the backing bar. Have fun bashing up scrap - it is cheaper than tail skins!

Cheap aluminum sheet...
A great way to get cheap aluminum sheet for practice is to order a "trim bundle" from Van's. I got one with my emp kit and didn't really know what it was for until I was done, and didn't need any of the stuff. The bundles are a good mix of .015, .025, .032 pieces, about 4" x 12" -- the leftovers from the trimmings they do for the various other parts we get. I found this stuff so useful that I ordered 3 bundles. It's great for practicing riveting, making riblets, or other stuff around the shop. It's 2024-T3, the same stuff the plane is made out of. I bought some Al sheet from my local HW store to do some practicing prior to starting the plane .. and found it much softer than 2024-T3 (no clue what the actual alloy was from the HW store)

LOL
Mine looks just like that too, including the dysfunctional hinge!

+1 on the scrap idea. Practice setting and drilling.just like the shampoo bottle. Set, drill, repeat.
Don't sweat the tool box. You can build another when your skills improve.
I keep mine as a reminder to read carefully and be patient.

It has been about 6 years
since we finished the riveting part of the RV-10 build, so, I bought the toolbox and the other kit to "refresh" --- finished the toolbox today. Everything worked alright, but certainly glad I was not pounding on a "real" airplane. I think I will paint the toolbox to match my RV-6A ---- that should hide some of the "oh, s*%^" stuff.
