Default Oshkosh Friday Arrivals?

In previous years, Louise and I have arrived at Oshkosh on Saturday or Sunday (I think we might have pulled in by car on Friday at "Sloshkosh", but that was too weird a year to remember...) before the show, so we know that you kind of wander in and out at will, no vendors open, etc, but no ticket issues.

This year, we're planning on heading up on Friday, and if the weather cooperates, we'll get in there that day - planning on setting up in Homebuilt Camping. Question for those in the know - I know that the NOTAM is in effect from Friday at 0600 - are the parking troops there on Friday, or do you just find your way to HBC and set up?

Hey Paul,

I'm doing the same thing. I talked to parking Emperor, Jeff Point and they will be there getting organized and parking planes on Friday. He said arrivals are minimal but they will take care of those that do. He related that most of his staff gets there on Saturday and Sunday just in time for the arrival fur ball!!!

As long as SOS Brothers has some on ice, I'll be happy after setting up camp. See you in a couple of weeks.

for every OSH trip...I've always flown in on Friday.

disclaimer: I've only been there in 2011.

FYI for other newbies like me:
We overnighted in Kindred ND (Fargo area). Left 0700 and KOSH was IFR or MVFR, but we figured we would get close and land to evaluate the weather. As e got closer the weather improved. about 60nm out we heard: "anyone out there heading towards Ripon for OshKosh"

Us: "yep we'll be there in a 20 or so" then nothing on the radio for a long time
as we approached RIPON we slowed to 90kts at ALT. wallowing along, rocked our wings when asked and plowed along, no one else around. As we got closer to Fisk, a controller said yellow RV, just make a 45 for RY27 monitor XXX.

Cool, easy as pie. once on downwind for 27, we get the call "yellow RV, cleared to land anywhere RY27, you have landing traffic on short final"

My friend said, "land on the orange dot so you can pretend it was hard" and I proceeded to make a terrible squirrely landing.

pulled off into the grass to be escorted by the marshalls. BUT I could not reach my HBP sign. so we got stopped and the marshall asked for our papers, except when I opened the Tip-up my paper HBP sign and his hat went flying away.
"Welcome to OSH....moron" or something like that I'm sure he was saying.

BTW they still took us to HBC and then turned us around when they realized that's not what we wanted. No way we could have back taxi'd to parking on Saturday or Sunday.

BTW- I'll be flying in on Friday again..watch out

b

SOS wasn't open prior to the official show days last year.

I've flown in on Saturday, and will again this year, if the weather is with us.

Saturday usually has very light traffic and getting in and out isn't an issue.

Default our plans

We are targeting flying in on Friday and parking at HBC. Sat arrivals have to contend with the group arrivals which can really screw up the traffic if you arrive at the wrong time.

I've flown into EAA on Friday ever since AirVenture has started on Monday (minus Sloshkosh) and there has always been great service with parking, welcome wagon, registration, etc. My only complaint is that the controllers do ask you to pull onto the grass...

You can call me "caviler", "reckless", or whatever you want, but I'll be arriving Sunday in a well controlled group of 40. Just don't call me "Bob" .
Oh, I'm all giddy just thinking about Oshkosh.

And what's wrong with being called "Bob"...ahem!

Cheers,
