It makes me smile to see all the nice comments on the paint job. Thank you. Paul and I are both a little conservative on "fashion" choices so it has been re-assuring that so many people have give Tsam a thumbs up. You will be able to inspect her (her gender was determined at the Christening) in person at AirVenture (part of the RV parade on Monday). Those at the RV-1 stop in Lee's Summit next week and those hanging around KANE this weekend may also get an in-person preview (if weather cooperates).
The paint job is really an effort of four people in the GLO Custom paint shop. Brandon mostly did the dis-assembly and assembly, and I bet more. Another fellow (who I never met) did fiberglass finishing and made us look good. Grady shot the base coat, underside shadow gray, and clear top coats, and The Shark did all of the airbrushing. He is amazing and this is his first airplane (besides some tail- and nose-art).
James Cameron came up with the concept. I think Paul was the one to first mention it as a consideration for Junior. We both worked on fleshing out our vision. An artist friend of Paul in the Twin Cities (Gary Zahradka -- http://www.zahradka-art.com/) did a "proof of concept" model, and Shark made it real.
As for the NX number, Bob, we put that number on partly 'cause we thought it was cool and partly because it allowed us to avoid the "Experimental" label in the cockpit (where would we have put it????). Here's the pertinent reg:
Section 45.22
(b) A small U.S.-registered aircraft built at least 30 years ago or a U.S.-registered aircraft for which an experimental certificate has been issued under Sec. 21.191(d) or 21.191(g) for operation as an exhibition aircraft or as an amateur-built aircraft and which has the same external configuration as an aircraft built at least 30 years ago may be operated without displaying marks in accordance with Secs. 45.21 and 45.23 through 45.33 if:

We can't wait! It will be a fight for who gets the fly the mission. (Despite Paul's claim that I have first dibs on Tsam, he's taking it off on xc for the next week so we know how true THAT statement really was.)

Paul and Louise, "Tsam" is one amazing aircraft, between working on helping to restore the past (RV-1), and now with "Tsam" y'all will inspire the future, as many of the young children that see this fantastic aircraft will dream about learning to fly, and us old children to continue to pound rivets. And to think this all started on a horse back ride in the Big Bend Country.

So, the yellow spinner really was a red herring...?!
Amazing work, and a stunning end product.

Hey Doug...how about some higher rez versions of these pics?
I can see them gracing the screens of many a VAF member's computers in days to come...including mine!
Paul & Louise, congratulations on having built a beautiful RV-3! Your concept was inspired, and the execution is outstanding. I hope you both enjoy many years of air beneath Tsam's wings!
And to the folks who brought the concept to life, you've created a masterpiece!
All concerned should be very proud!
Blue skies,
David
