Default Perform those 500hr mag inspections!

I just completed the 500hr inspections on a pair of Slick mags off of a buddy's RV6A.

The left mag was in beautiful condition.

The right mag was fine with one exception. Inside the mag was a ton of red powdery dust on everything. Upon further investigation, we found the rotor gear had a broken key that prevents it from rotating on the rotor shaft. All that was keeping this mag in time was the friction fit of the gear to the shaft. The key was broken for some time and it was obvious that this is where the red dust came from because of how the broken off piece and the pocket of the gear looked. There must have been some pretty good movement to produce all that dust.

The engine was running fine before the inspection but who knows how much longer this mag would have stayed in time??

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

I just got my Slick 4372's back from these folks: http://www.aircraftmagnetoservices.com/
They are off my C-152 which was getting hard to start. My AP/AI had them off last annual (less than 50 hours since) for the 500 hour inspection and he found nothing obviously wrong and just re-set the E gap. Magneto Services has the equipment to test them properly and found problems in both mags that they were able repair/replace at a very reasonable cost. Well under the cost of replacements.

Default Agree

with the 500 hour inspection, but leaning toward opening up the Slick mags at every annual. I had the left mag fail at 700 hours over mountains on the way to LA last year. Inspection after landing revealed that the rotor finger/striker had seperated from the rotor, which destroyed the plastic gears.

Yesterday, I was checking the mag timing and found that the right mag was off by about 10? -- that's strange. I then pulled the mag for inspection and found rotor finger/striker had unseated from the rotor. There was also oil inside the mag. Both mags have blast tubes for cooling. I will post photos later.

Agreed.
At least check the mags every year at the condition inspection/annual.

Have a friend that had his explode in flight. Made a mess he said, but still ran to touchdown on the remaining mag.

There is something to be said for redundancy.

Default Mags

My own view is at 500 hours I start looking for a shop to send my mags for overhaul. Yes many last much longer however this is just my view of mag risk management.
