Default Digitrak and GPS

Looking for information on wiring the Garmin 296 to our Digitrak wing leveler.
Garmin says you can't do it, only to Marine auto pilots. I talked to a RV8
owner that said he did it and it worked fine but he sold the plane and all
the drawings with it. Would appreciate any help on this.

You don't need the Porcine unit at all.

I have my 296 serial data wired directly to the DigiTrak serial input and it works fine. You need to buy the cable from Garmin or a dealer to allow you to wire power and serial data.

While you are at it, wire one of the speaker output signals into you audio panel. Garmin does not yet support aviation audio alerts, but may do so at some point. In the meantime, the 296 will give you a voice alert on power fail.

Garmin's advice seems strange... I guess if they haven't tested it, they can't recommend it... but it works.

Final note: the 296 does not put out true RS-232 levels, but that's not a problem for the DigiTrak... it works fine.
