FWIW, I've found the sides to be smoother than the center. Also, the north seems better than the south, so land a little long to the north or stop quickly and taxi slow to the south. Definitely is rough though. With all that rocky foundation, don't need to worry much about it being soft from rain.

You are correct I should have had in there "or a short walk". My idea is to be close enough to the airport so I do not need a vehicle to get there. That way If I want to leave at O dark thirty I can get to my plane without the need for a ride or to drop off a rental.

Memphis you say. Never been there or to that state. You might have just given me a destination

Even that is probably not the norm unless you pick larger airports with towers and FBOs open late into the evening...close to larger cities.

That would be a good filter on places to stop if a website like Airnav could do it.

Exclamation

Out West, Lone Pine Airport in the Owens Valley (O26) has a Best Western less than a 200 yard walk from the FBO, and beautiful views of Mt. Whitney thrown in...

Art Evans is a friend of mine and all-around good guy. He lives on the airport next to the hotel and is able to live there since he is the designated "security guard".

Buchanan Field in Concord CA. The Crowne Plaza has its own parking ramp at the south end of the field. Park, unload your bags and walk right in. Rental cars are available next door at Pacific States Aviaton.

Harris Ranch in Coalinga California has its own strip (3O8). Great hotel (resort, really) and FANTASTIC restaurant. Tie downs are steps away from the front desk.

Two thumbs up for the Harris Ranch Steaks mentioned above...

A bit further South Tehachapi (TSP) has hotels and resturants within a 10 minute walk from the airport.

Default RV hotel

Does no one take advantage of the 'RV Hotel' listings here on this site? I'm on it, as are several friends, & have never gotten a call or email to take me up on it. Most are either on an airpark or will pick you up & return you to your plane. And the price is right for lodging, too. :-)
