How are you dimpling the holes?
If using a C-frame, just give them one good whack. Don?t do the ?tap, tap, tap? thing.
Also, when you put the rivet in, regardless of how you are driving it, put some rivet tape over it, even if gravity will keep the rivet in place.
I found this makes a better rivet. I think it keeps the rivet from popping out on the first strike with the rivet gun. Also, don't push on the rivet with the bucking bar. Just touch the rivet with the bar and let the gun do all the work.
