I ask because I am currently trying to decide between the G3X suite and the GRT HX to put in my lightining/RV-7A, whichever it turns out to be. You'll have to give us a compare/contrast of those two avionics systems once the -3 is done. Maybe I should infer something from your decision to use the Garmin stuff instead of another GRT setup?

Thanks for the great pics. I haven't seen it in a light aircraft, but I sure know the feeling of seeing nothing but clouds when you pop over the mountains from the Imperial Valley. Luckily, the mighty SH-60B has the best avionics suite your tax dollars can buy. A TACAN. Period.

Happy New Year,
Case

Hi Case,

yes, I am driving the GRT Suite with the industry standard 430 for an IFR navigator. Not much else you can do, actually! the GRT was really designed to work with the 430, and does so very well.

Don't infer too much by our choosing the G3X Suite for the new airplane. I explained this in a thread last fall. I like to do development work, and the G3X is new and exciting. The GRT is solid, growing, and extremely capable. I think that they are both "above the line" in terms of serious IFR capability, and look forward to having both of them to play with. The GRT has more years in the field, but the G3X has a great legacy of high-end certified suites to give me confidence in the hardware and software. I have no desire to get rid of my GRT - I look forward to helping continue in it's development, just as I am feeding back things on the G3X to the Garmin folks. All great to work with!

Either way, it is a really cool way to go to California....

Paul

Paul,

Thanks for the info. I'm a ways off from needing to actually buy anything, but it's always nice to start trying to understand what the options are. One aircraft designer I spoke to said their favorite setup was an HRT HX on one side with a Garmin GDU-375 on the other. He thought the GRT product was better for engine info, while the Garmin had a better map display. Go figure. I'm hoping to get a chance to see both down in Sebring, FL this month before I head back to SD.

Cheers,
Case
