Default Splicing GPS antenna wire

I am wondering if its OK to cut and splice the Garmin 396 Antenna wire.
I am going to mount the antenna under the cowl and I dont want to have to put such a LARGE hole in the firewall for the end of the wire(about 5/8 ").
If I can splice it, the hole will only be around 1/4".
Thanks

I wouldn't advise splicing it but you can cut off the end and install a new connector. I've done that several times.

Please explain how one would install a new connector. Where could I get one?
Garmin?
Thanks a Lot.

Default how I did it.

Drill a hole in the firewall and place a BNC connector.

I used one of these...
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll

You will need a BNC crimper which you can pick up at digikey or a lot of other places.

You can get the connector at digikey.
You will also want to get a BNC crimping tool.

I am having problems with posting pictures from ImageShack, so put a number of tries in above.

Default GPS under cowl

Does anyone know the level of signal loss (if any) caused by placing GPS antennas on the glare shield or under the engine cowl? I?ve had a 396 in my PA-28 for years with the GPS antenna on the glare shield and notice at times it takes longer to acquire signal.
