Default Ductworks upgrade?

Can we install in the same hole/lens cover we already have carefully cut into our wings with your LED's?? I'd be interested, I love or appreciate my Ductwork HID's (2) when I'm night flying,,, as my daughter and I returned from Goodland KS to Wichita last night, all in the dark,,, Thanks.

I used to fly often into a field like that, and usually ended up turning the landing lights off on short final. They really didn't illuminate a black runway with no markings, and during the flare they were really distracting. Sometimes less is more.

All I can say is the HID's light the runway very nicely, plenty of time to see the runway and effect a normal flare, before them it was just keep it in the right attitude and wait for her to hit the runway! Maybe my eyes just ain't what they used to be but a black short narrow runway on a dark nite just isn't my idea of fun with no lights. I love Lumens, mass quantities if possible and more is definately better in this case

Mind you I am not trying to take anything away from the newer LED systems but Lumens are important to me.

Default Landing Light Location

My wing kit should arrive the first week of Feb, so it will be a few months before I'll be ready to install landing lights.

When did you order your landing lights? Can I just run conduit and order later, or is it easier to install during the wing build?

I'm thinking of installing one landing light in each wing, with wigwag capability.

Van's lists a wingtip mount on their website, but I haven't seen much discussion here of this option. What are the pros and cons of leading edge vs tip mounting?

Do the AeroLED landing lights fit only the Duckworks leading edge mount in an RV?

Thanks,

I've not flown with the tip lights, but a friend's RV-7 went with the wingtip combo units with pos'n lights and landing lights. He says he would not install them again. His exact comment, as I recall, was, " I should have known that having the light way out there at the tips wouldn't be much help. I want to see in front of me, not way out there."

Thanks,
THe AeroSUN 1600 units fit in the Duckworks leading edge.

The AeroSUNLite units fit in the RV wingtips.

The difference is size, weight, lumens and power. The AeroSUN 1600 units are 1600 lumens while the AeroSUNLite units are 800 lumens and 1/2 the weight, power and size.

Both units include built in wig-wag control circuitry, so you don't need a separate box for wig-wag, just wires and switches. We have wiring diagrams on our website.

Default Cheap HID Alternative

Insert favorite HF story here, but these might be interesting:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95058

No idea on noise or other issues, but at $90 per side, might be worth looking into - that's cheaper than the set I made myself with parts from a wrecked Audi......

VAF special offer update:

We have caught up on our backlog of AeroSUN 1600 units, and have decided to offer a special to VAF readers. We are offering our AeroSUN 1600 units for $300 for 1, or $600 for 2 (plus shipping) which is just slightly higher than Aircraft Spruce (we can't undercut our distributors), but by ordering from our website, you will be able to have your units shipped the next business day.

If you are interested in ordering direct from our website, this special offer page is found here:
http://www.aeroleds.com/Special.html

Thanks for all the helpful feedback from VAF members.

Thumbs up AeroSUN 1600's

I received my AeorSUNs from ACS a few days ago. I can tell you first hand now that these suckers are BRIGHT!!!! I put one on the workbench and walked out to the hangar door and couldn't look directly at the light! The only thing I have to compare it to is a 55w Duckworks, which is no comparison at all. As soon as we order the new Duckworks 100w lights for my friend's RV-7A, I'll be able to do a side-by-side comparison.

I'm certain it will be brighter than the 100w, but I'm guessing not as bright as Duckworks HID lights. I'm trying to talk my friend into springing for the HIDs, but he says if he's going to spend that much, he'll just buy the AeroSUNs, which are just over half the cost of 2 HIDs. I love the built-in wig-wag feature. It'll be quite some time before I have them mounted, but I'll take pics as I can. Right now, we're cutting out the leading edges on my friend's RV-7A and will order the 100w DWs for that soon. Once we have his installed, I'll probably install mine so we can at least do the side-by-side photos.

The lighting on my RV-9A will consist of the following:
Jeff's LED wingtip nav/strobe combos.
AeorSUN 1600s in each wing leading edge.
KE Strobes LED tail/strobe combo.
3 individual strobe power supplies (Nova Quickstrobe), installed next to each strobe tube.

With this combination, all of my lights will be LEDs or strobe tubes. No incandescent lighting!

Craig,

What is the flash rate of the strob power supplies. There isn't any indication on the vendor's web site.

thanks,

bob
