Yes, thank you very much. The screen is indeed black with no obvious attempt for the unit to boot. I'll borrow a windows computer and try the detailed step by step and report back.

Well, it seems to have worked. It is still doing some wonky things like not accepting the MLO file and its hit or miss with finding the terrain data. I switched internal cards out and it seem to be functioning much better than it ever has before. Monday, I'll head on over to the office supply store and pick up a new 32 gig verbatim micro-SDHC. Does anyone know if there is an increase in reliability by going with the "premium", "Pro", or "Pro II" versions of that card? The prices are so inexpensive that there is absolutely no reason not to get the absolute best one for the application.

We like using the Verbatim Micro-SD cards. However I once went out to a store and bought whatever I could find from different manufacturers to see how tolerant the CPU is to slight differences between cards.
I did this mostly because of bad experiences with the larger SD cards in the old days.
I found the newer Micro-SD cards are very similar between makes. I have only ever found one that did not work well - that was a no-name brand of uncertain origin.

Don't worry about the class of the card - that only really matters for write speed and even a low class is plenty fast for the EFIS (it never writes to the card unless there is pilot action requiring this such as copy of a file or change a a setting etc). Things go wrong when you write to cards so the EFIS is designed to do as little of that as possible. You can't really damage a card or its structure reading from it.

16GByte cards are more than ample for storage even in the worst case scenario. Don't get anything bigger than 32GByte - there are differences in the card protocols and not all of the larger cards can default to the lower density protocols.

Anyway - very glad you managed to get somewhere with the system.
