Well, first off, I want to thank Larry Larson and Rick Brennan, both members of VAF, for their support during my recovery from surgery.

I?m not yet working on the RV-3B. In fact, it?s only been this week that I?ve even thought about it. Before that I just wasn?t well enough. One of the factors was that as a result of the operation, I was always very tired and couldn?t focus my attention on anything much. Fortunately, that?s now receding.

I did some minor shop clean-up the other day. It was the first time I?d been out there to do anything useful since the operation - baby steps.

The main upcoming work is to finish riveting the tailcone top on and then to make the composite canopy frame. I imagine these will take me a while, even after I get back to it. For the present, my physical restrictions preclude that work for some weeks ahead.

Here and there, I did manage to change some of the photo hosting from TinyPic to Since the TinyPic photos seem to be gone completely, I used the PDF copies I?d made of the blog pages as a photo source. It?s slow going and somewhat boring, too. The photos are, as of right now, back through post #136. I hope to continue the effort.

Sure wish there were a better way of managing that.

One thing worth noting is that on these photos, I?m not including links to an alternate photo-host just in case. Why? It would be a lot of work. I recommend that as I get a full page updated, that you hit (this works on a Mac, don?t know about Windows) Print, PDF, Save As PDF. You?ll have your very own copy. You can probably save the page as an HTML page but that?s a bit of a pain and takes a lot of space. PDF is recommended in spite of its imperfections.

The links to an alternate photo-hosting site have been iffy at best. I?ve primarily used, and many of the links I posted now seem to be defunct. I don?t know why. It?s frustrating and I don?t know what the solution is. I'm thinking of a blog on one the blog-hosting sites, but that seems ambitious.

Good to hear you are getting closer to being back building Dave, life events sure do get in the way of progress sometimes. Sometimes I went for many months over a period of years without any meaningful progress because of other things taking priority. So long as you keep it warm and dry the project will wait for you.
RV 3B. Very slow build. Now onto final assembly...

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery, Dave. If you can find help to get the turtledeck skin riveted on, I think the canopy fiberglass will be a nice easy way to get back into building. I found the canopy fiberglass layup to be fun and relaxing, and not physically demanding.

Thanks to a couple of friends, Dave Dooley and Glenn Potter, the last skin on the plane was riveted today. It?ll still be a while until I can do some riveting, so these guys came over and finished riveting the turtledeck to the fuselage. They riveted the right longeron and all four bulkheads. The left longeron had already been riveted, thanks to Dave Dooley, who helped me do it.

Finally, I present the incredible clecoless fuselage. And yes, the roll bar is intentionally offset slightly.

I'm still definitely in the recovery stage, and won't be jumping back in to the project quickly. For one thing, I'm limited to lifting 10 pounds and that ladder in the photo, which is in the way, weighs over 14; I'll have to get help to put it away.

The canopy fairing often is fabricated after the canopy is attached to the frame and installed on the fuselage. That way, with everything in place, the shape can be developed. My approach is a little different.

I?m filling the fairing space with foam for a mold. That?ll have the faired shape of the top of the fuselage and the canopy base will be made to conform to it further in the process.

Here, you can see the first slab of foam in place with the second measured and marked on the foam blank. The foam itself cost $22 or $23 from Home Depot, and measures 2? thick by 4? x 8?. This ought to last me for any mold I need on the plane.

If you look closely you can see a batten representing the faired shape at the center of the cockpit. This is an example of the shape I?ll need to trim the foam to.

I'm using a reverse-cut finish saw, a hand saw, to cut the foam. It's easy and quick and only has a narrow kerf.

Work continues to move slowly with my recovery well along but not complete.

Here?s the stack with some work ahead, like gluing, filling, shaping, smoothing, etc. You know, like all the work. But at least the void is filled.

Progress will continue to go in bits and chunks for a while, as my recovery continues. But I hope, always in a forward direction.
