A single main bus works for most conventional aircraft, both VFR and IFR, with varying levels of backup and redundancy depending on your mission.

If you are running an electrically-dependent engine or some other alternate configuration, the manufacturer of those systems typically specifies the needed electrical system and you should follow that.
