Default How to Paint Striping Mask? Assembled or Disassembled?

I see some design companies offering striping designs using a paint mask as opposed to vinyl. Does this require the fuselage and emp to be completely assembled?

If my garage (and whatever paint booth it can hold) can't paint the plane unless it's disassembled, does that mean that I can't make use of the mask stencil for striping without, say, moving the paint booth to a hangar?

With just a little extra work, you can use the mask...
  • Temporarily assemble in the driveway.
  • Apply mask.
  • Trim mask at panel lines.
  • Disassemble.
  • Paint in pieces.

Just use hardware store bolts that are ground to an almost point and sanded so they are smaller than the "real" bolts. Wings come on and off in a few minutes that way. Once you put the "real" bolts in, you no not want to have to remove them. That is no fun at all.

Default Paint Masks Disassembled

I painted my RV-7 in the shop before assembly and made extensive use of paint masks. HERE is a link to many photos and descriptions of the process. Worked out great.
