Default Draining preservative oil from IO-540 - when to refill?

Hey all,

I've just finished mounting my new Lycoming IO-540 engine (from Van's) and am looking to install my EFII throttle body.

There's currently a plastic square bolted loosely over the bottom of the sump where the throttle body is supposed to mount. When I remove that, preservative oil starts to ooze out.

Is this fine? I guess this air inlet isn't supposed to have oil in it eventually... should I just let it drain out and then install the throttle body, or should I go through the full preservative oil removal process at this stage?

If the latter is the correct answer, once I drain the preservative oil, should I go ahead and add engine oil (SAE 20W-50, for example) now, or should I wait?

Thanks all... I'm trying to absorb all I can from the lycoming manual and the forums but it is definitely confusing at times.

I just went through this, let that oil drain out. You can even remove the hex plug to drain it out of the bottom. You will then want to clean the air box so it is free from oil. When the engine is being preserved if an intake valve is open some oil drains down the intake runner, I probably had 4 oz. I left the preservation oil in being careful not to rotate the engine and will drain according to Lycoming’s instructions just prior to first start.
