How to cope with the heat. (hint: leave)
The weekend was threatening to be pretty hot in CA's central valley. Thursday it was decided the best thing to do was to just up and leave for the coast where the highs were only supposed to hit 75 rather than 105 at home.
The drive would take 5 hours, but as you all know, the RV can do better than that. The plan is to depart after work on Friday between 5 and 6pm.

And so we did. Once reaching cruising altitude, the beverage and snack service is started.
It's not long before we are following the coast north:
1 hour 5 minutes from takeoff to shutdown at Shelter Cove. The backpacks are unloaded and we start walking off into the sunset.

cont...
2 nights camping and hiking:
Sunday morning, an easy hike of a few miles along the beach and we are back at the airport, loaded up 76CX and back home we went. Again, avoiding another 5 hour drive.
Final to Yolo County:

Without the RV, we would not have bothered to make the drive for just a weekend getaway.

Thanks for posting this. Not every RV adventure has to be completely EPIC. You made excellent use of the resources for a fantastic weekend to just step OUT.

For those not familiar with CA's "Lost Coast", it's called that because there are no roads; the only way in/out is to hike. (I guess you could charter a smallish boat.)
There used to be a campground at the south end of the runway, I presume it's still there? Nowhere near as nice as the National Forest to the north, but it does have rest rooms and restaurants. And RVs (the other kind).

Thanks, That's about it for a story; just a nice weekend trip. We hiked a little less than 3 miles up the beach and camped. Also hiked up Horse Mnt creek trail.

Nice to demonstrate the practicality of a good performing airplane. We often plan a thursday evening departure for our weekend getaways and in fact just did so last thursday. The bags are packed the night before and as soon as we get home from work we roll the airplane outside and GO. We tend to go hotter places though. Two weeks ago it was Mojave- Phoenix (departed at 107, landed after sunset at 109). This weekend it was Mojave - Vegas.

Fabulous! Now I get your comment to me earlier about your pix being posted. I need to repeat that trip myself. Thanks for sharing!

Nice write up Jeff!
My dad lives in Fort Bragg and I've flown the RV down a couple of times. (Little River) I've flown over Shelter Cove each time and thought of stopping there someday. The coast is sure spectacular around there.

Great post, Jeff. Thanks for the write up. It sounds like it was a couple mile hike, but what direction did you go to get to your campsite>? The campsite looks remote but the airport itself seems to have lots of homes around it. Trail leading to a destination or just walking the beach until you found someplace sufficiently remote? Definitely on my go-to list.

We parked at the North end of the airport and had to walk about 1/2 a mile to get to the beach at the end of Dolphin Dr.

An official trailhead (Black Sands Beach) is a bit further up.
We hiked about 2 miles north along the beach to Horse Mountain Creek.
There are some spots in the grass above the sand that were obvious places people have camped. We setup there for the first night. About 50 feet up into the trees along the creek was another well established site; we decided to camp there the second night.
Here is some good info about the trail, where to camp, etc. They are switching to an online permit system instead of the paper ones you fill out at the trailhead:
