I just painted my first stars & bars test panel. Look for my thread with pic in the "Painting Your RV" forum section; Sherwin-Williams Skyscapes GA test panel. Surprised by the result... and learned a LOT.

Default Hey, I know that scheme!

Hi Sam,
Paint scheme looks great! Are you going with the knight and boomerang, too?

I was a Boomer B/N from 88-91. I was there when that A-7 from VFA-147 chained down one of our tankers and shot it. What a mess. I think there were 2 fatalities, which was lucky given the amount of damage. One of our Chief's was heads-up enough to pull the lox bottles out of the nose, while the plane was still burning, before they blew up, too.

Brings back memories, plenty of good ones too!

Thanks,
Jeff Hirsch

Default Fellow Boomer!

Jeff!
Good to talk to a fellow Boomer. No, I am not planning on a boomerang and knight on the tail. You can see the tail up on the shop wall behind the airplane. It is a checkerboard pattern with Modex number 506. But Fast Signs is making a nice duplicate of the Boomer patch except larger than the standard patch. That will go on the nose, under and forward of the windscreen. So when people see the airplane, it will say 'Attack Squadron 165' right there.

If you look at the right side of the airplane, it is marked up as my old Prowler squadron VAQ-130, and will have that patch on the nose as well. East coast air wing 3 on the Enterprise. I couldn't let all my Prowler buddies get mad at me for not embracing my EA-6B time!

Steve!
My favorite Pensacola Navy Flight Instructor! I still remember our orange and white T-34C trip to Sun-n-Fun. How have you been? Are you still flying?

Default Instrument Panel Power Up

I threw the avionics master switch on for the first time. It all seemed to work as advertised, and no smoke or burning smells which I think is a good sign. Plenty of functional testing to go.

Awesome looking bird!!

Also, any stories about the Intruder for those of us who always wanted to fly it? I can only imagine what 28 500lb bombs must have felt like coming off the jet...

Default Intruders Forever

Yes the A-6 was a great airplane, although by the time I got to it, we were mostly carrying precision guided weapons and not the 28 500b bombs from the early days. Laser guided bombs (GBU-12,16,10), Mavericks (AGM-65), Harpoons (AGM-84s) and HARM (AGM-88). The Intruder was retired during my time in the Navy and I was transitioned to the EA-6B Prowler, so I have dedicated the right side of the plane to my Electronic Attack brethren. "VAQ" in naval aviation is the designation for a fixed wing, electronic attack squadron. In my case VAQ-130 is my old Prowler squadron out of Whidbey Island, Washington. We flew off the Enterprise on the east coast. They fly the EA-18G Growler now.

When our Super Hornets call the ball they use the "Rhino" call sign. From your username it looks like you might be an old Navy Flyer yourself.

Good deduction...I do fly the Super Hornet. I'm a few months away from finishing my fleet JO tour, looking for an RV-8 to play with during shore duty orders...

Always dreamed of flying the Intruder, but the Rhino is a **** of a jet.

Can't wait to see your RV completed! I love the Navy paint job you've got going on!

Fly Navy!
