Default Status in FAA Registry

I need some information I am sure someone knows.
I was looking at an RV for purchase and I discovered in the Faa Registry that the "Status " box is marked "expired."
What does that mean actually? Not registered at this moment? Not paid recently?
Is it anything to be concerned about?
Thank for your help in advance.
Dave

Typically the FAA will put a "hold" on an expired registration. The hold will go for five years or until they get documentation that the aircraft was sold, scrapped, exported, etc.

So - tell the current owner to renew his registration.

I was going to purchase an aircraft with the same situation and called the FAA they told me that if ownership is transferred all that needs to be done is fill out new registration form , send in and keep pink copy in aircraft until permanent one is received, the present owner is not able to do do this ,only a new owner.
This has been several years ago so it would be good idea to cal the Feds first.
