KS, not CA...

And you're right, it's amazing there were only minor injuries. One of the pictures makes it look like the airplane is pretty well wadded up, the others don't look quite as bad.

I'm wondering if the term "vertical pass" is another term for "knife-edge flight."

Looks like it was a slider canopy and it held up really well. Those guys' guardian angels were on duty too.
