Why is Rotax 912 called 912?
I asked over in the Rotax Owner’s Forum and haven’t got an answer. Thought for sure those guys would be in the know. My questions is… why is Rotax 912 called a 912? I don’t think it has anything to do with engine displacement. Something that was bothering me and got my curiosity up.
Edit... I have just emailed Rotax in Austria this same question. I'll advise answer soonest.

Nope! The original 80 hp was 1211cc and the 100 hp 912S is 1352cc.

And I believe the 914 is the same displacement as the 80HP 912, just boosted to 45" MAP.

Because the 912 is the 4 cylinder version of the 6 cylinder 911, obvious answer from a Porsche guy.

Hey Guys,
asking Hans Paierl, "the father of the 912" concerning this question,
he laughed and said: back in 1989 Rotax were building engines with less than 1000cm3
and because our account department could not handle more than three numerics back then,
he decided to choose the niner for Aircraft engines and the 12 for 1200cm3 cubic capacity
of the first 80 HP Rotax 912.
