Default 5/16-24 tap, please help

I am working on the door pins, and the directions call for tapping two inches inside the locking pins with a 5/16-24 tap. My taps will not work, as they have about 7/8" threads then have a larger shank. I ordered Irwin taps on Amazon that showed a smaller shank, but the photo was of something else and when received they also have a large shank. I am still looking for a reasonably priced tap to do this with, I found one online for ~$70 but that seems excessive. Any advice? I called Cleveland and Avery but they do not have anything.

Perfect, thanks. I had not thought about a cheap set would have less steel thus the small shank I need. Going by HF tonight.

ENCO has 6 inch long 5/16-24 tap with undercut shank for $25-28. Catalog # 326-1526 or 337-4612. Those will be the best option for you. ENCO on line address is use-enco.com
