Has anyone flown to Cortez colorado? Planning a trip from eastern Colorado and want to know any issues flying in there. Planning to go South around the highest peaks.

Been in there once or twice a few years ago on the way from Houston to the Northwest - was good every time - came in from the southeast over Mesa Verde. Good fuel stop.

Default Cortez

Just flew into Cortez in June. They have a good lighted runway. I was there for a few days and did several takeoffs and landings. Had no problems. It is in a valley with high terrain on both sides but the terrain at the runway ends does not rise much and there is plenty of room to fly your pattern. I think I arrived about 7pm and there was still an attendant at the FBO who greeted me on the CTAF when I self announced. There were plenty of tie down spaces, but I needed my own straps.

I had friends at the Ute Indian Casino/hotel that picked me up. I'm guessing the casino would send a shuttle if you need it. Monument Valley is about 60nm (by air) to the west and great to see in the morning light. Lots to see and do in the area.

BTW, I came up from the SE so I didn't get near the high peaks you referred to. John
