Uncle John’s Fly-In
Capt Sandy and I made our first visit to Triple Tree on Friday for the 2nd annual Uncle John's Fly in. Nice flight even with 40 to 50 knot wind on our beam. We were the second plane to arrive on Friday. Smaller turnout than I or the organizers seemed to expect. I think there were about 15 airplanes parked when we left about 1pm.
Fabulous, smooth 400'x7000' grass runway. Very nice facilities. Custom made mower. Looking forward to returning for the South Carolina Breakfast Club in August and the Triple Tree Fly-in in September.

Picked up my airplane this week and flew it home from Oshkosh Friday/Saturday. Popular Grove did the tear down/rebuild. Also had them IRAN the cylinders with them grinding the valves and installing new guides. Dual PMags were installed and so was a new 3 blade MT 9 prop by Myers. It sure runs smooth! I also had them install a FLYLEDS Wigwag switch - nice addition!
Do have a few squawks to address but overall I’m extremely pleased with the work Myers Aviation did restoring my RV7A to flying status and Popular Grove’s engine and cylinder work. In fact it’s better now than before last summer’s prop strike at Airventure. Looks great and flys even better!
Seating the cylinder rings is underway. Good start on that with two hours of test flights at Oshkosh and 5.6 hour, two leg return trip at 24 inches manifold pressure and 2400 rpm with 12 gal/hr to keep CHTs down. Highest CHT on takeoff/climb out was around 395 (#4) with cruise CHTs for 1,2 &3 between 310 to 325 with #4 the highest at 355. Need to get the oil temp higher because it stayed around 155 - which is too low to burn off condensation - but it was cold at Oshkosh and for the return legs.
I really want to thank Global Insurance through AOPA’s Assured Partners for being there when I needed them. Global recommended Myers Aviation and thankfully I took their advice. It was a smooth process.
I left OSH Friday before last night’s big snow storm. RON at Des Moines to let weather get past my second leg flight. Long, busy and tiring week. I’m really exhausted but at least N523RM is back in the air and now home. YEA!

Flight to Florida
We made the flight from Texas to Florida on Saturday. Lots of zig zagging around isolated cells but we made it to Gainesville, Florida. First cross country trip this year. Got 38 hours on new engine in 7 now. Got a downtown hotel and had a nice evening.

Took the RV-4 up for a Sunday flight.
With two jobs, two airplanes of my own, another airplane that I fly for work, and a motorcycle in the garage, I just don't have enough time in the day, to do anything as much as I want.. so the RV-4 doesn't get as much use as I'd like. But I do love having it, because you can't beat views like this! Plus, RV flying is good for the mind.. it's a type of fun and relaxation that only the motorcycle rivals.
Today, I went looking for a waterfall, and the waterfall didn't disappoint.

Flew back from a wonderful week in the Bahamas. I flew from Michigan to Governor's Harbor, Eleuthera where we rented a house on the beach last weekend. My wife and I had a great vacation, saw a SpaceX launch from the air near Cape Canaveral, and visited friends in Greenville, SC on the way home. Another great experience due to a decision years ago to build an RV.

I got to fly it!
Just a short hop over to Siskiyou Co. to tow gliders, but this is the first time the RV-8 has flown since November. I did a mod on the lower cowl, reducing the cowl exit area to 37 in^2, and installing an electric cowl flao.
The paint on the lower cowl never did stick rigght - I made a mistake of some kind years ago with the activated UV Smoothprime and it did not bond correctly, so my lower cowl has had big blisters for years. So this winter, I finally took care of it.
Anyway, it felt great to get to fly it again. Too soon to say anything about the change in temps from the cowl exit change, since it was 26F at 5000 ft, so not exactly a representative test for cooling.

Chicken Killer Escapes to Tennessee
George the Jack Russell mix is a sweet dog - but he apparently can't abide chickens. His owner surrendered him to the shelter in North Carolina. I picked him up Sunday at the Statesville Regional Airport (KSVH) near Charlotte and flew him to the Maury County, TN airport (KMRC) near Columbia to meet the folks from the rescue organization.

An Award Worth Sharing
On Saturday evening EAA Chapter 113 held our annual Awards Banquet, where I received a Completion Award plaque for my RV-8. Normally I wouldn't share that as newsworthy, but I laughed hard when I flipped the plaque horizontally and examined the back. Just what I need... another project! Geez it's always something with that airplane mutter mutter mutter...
(If you look closely, I'd already laid out nail holes for the fix before I took the photos. Anything to avoid working on the wheel fairings.)

I moved a friend’s beautiful RV-8 to the hangar at my house. I flew on the wing of another friend and his passenger took a bunch of pics. Sadly, the reason I’m flying this plane is that my friend passed away last fall and I have sold the plane for the estate. I moved the plane to my hangar to take care of some transponder issues.
I hadn’t soloed an RV-8 until last week. The insurance company accepted my 400-ish hours of RV-3 time and 16k+ total time as adequate so I gave it a whirl. I maintain that the RV-8 is kinda a family truckster compared to my RV-3, but it’s still pretty darned nice. I think if the buyer had been unreasonable in the pre-buy, I would have bought the plane for myself!

Brian, I recognized the runway from the picture posted on the front page. That runway is so rough I thought I had a flat tire when I landed.
We enjoyed our stay there a few years ago but still prefer Hope Town. Limited on restaurants on Eleuthera.

I took Friday off so I could do a long weekend of airshow practice in the RV-6 with the largest civilian formation display team in the southern hemisphere.
I'm paired up with another RV-6 as a synchro pair. Let's just say that opposing passes are a lot of fun when they're briefed, risk-managed, and properly timed.
I got to try out my shiny new instrument rating on the way home. It was surprisingly enjoyable to be insufferably smug in a room full of VFR pilots on the last day, all staring at their iPads wondering if they'll get home or have to spend the night in a country town, while I'm projecting a cheshire-cat grin and filing.
(they all found appropriately sized holes and got home in due course. You can only begin to imagine how tedious I'd have been if they'd had to deck it somewhere and wait )

Our formation display team is 12 RVs and a Yak-55, but one of the RVs was a last minute substitution with a Pitts due to engine trouble so we had to slum it a bit.
