Cape Cod trip Sept 3-12ish

The planned route

The legs

(1) to Dumas TX

(2) to Boonville MO

(3) to Lorain OH

(4) to Barnstable MA

We want to overnight in Lorain OH so my husband can show me where he grew up, in nearby Amherst. These legs are all around 500nm each, a bit optimistic so it will likely be 2 days to OH, spend a day there visiting relatives and seeing the sights before we wander farther east.

It's no "Vlad Trip", but it will be fun. We'll try to snap a few nice photo's along the way.

Oh yes, then the route back home. One leg, 2000nm, air refueling. I'll introduce my husband to the "poopysuit". He'll like that.

Barnstable Muni

Acrogirl

KHYA, Barnstable Muni Airport, was named Boardman-Polando Field in in 1981, dedicated to my uncle, Russell Boardman, on the 50th anniversary of his world record non-stop flight from New York to Istanbul in 1931. In the main area where the ticket counters are, look up and you will see some window panels with pictures of Boardman and Polando. Then go down the hall and find the Conference Room and you will see lots of memorbilia of the flight and of his other aviation feats. He was a native of the area.

Don't forget to have some lobster and fried clams while you are in the area. I was just there two weeks ago.

Stu, all i can say is wow!

How did you end up in texas?

Ac girl, look me up when you get to town and say hello.

My girlfriend and I are usually around.

:). CJ

Captain let's do a meet up at Barnstable to honor Stu's uncle Russel.

Cathy do you have a tracker in your plane?

We'll pprobably run to P'Town, great people watching.

Ill definately check out the HYA airport and the Boardman history there. I love that kind of stuff.

PYM is right there in the neighborhood I see. I'll post up if we can get ourselves there.

I do not have a "tracker" per se. My husband was kind of a "stalker" when we met, but no, no tracker.

If you need anything

Cathy, you will have a great trip. I am enjoying the flying here as it is different from the west coast. I am sure Turbo will be on here shortly to give some pointers.

I live in Newport (close to KUUU) and have my RV based in Providence, KPVD, so if you need anything while you are in the area, don't hesitate to ask.

Dan,

My best customer is in Pawtucket and I fly into PVD 2 - 3 times a year to visit him. I usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express near the airport. Could I contact you next time I am up that way?

Barbyanns Seafood

Cathy,

Right next to the Barnstable Airport. I use to eat there often. Its been a few years but the "Captain Mearle's Seafood Stew" is absolutely delictable!!! (Of course you have to wrestle the bowl away from Captain Mearle:D) Anyway...I found their food very tasty and reasonably priced. Once me and another guy flew the Aztec I owned up there from North Carolina....ate dinner and flew back!

Here is the link: http://www.barbyanns.com/

Anyway....sounds like a great trip...I am sure you and your hubby will like it...looking forward to the pics!

YOL BOLSON!!!

Chris (and anyone else coming to RI),
Absolutely. Be happy to help in any way I can!

Dan

What is the prohibited area near Barnstable for? It's very small.

PAVE PAWS is a United States Air Force Space Command radar system operated by three 21st Space Wing squadrons for missile warning and space surveillance. Operational PAVE PAWS radars are located at:So basically, stay away from this if you don't want to be sterile.

The Cape, stops along the way

Is anyone here familiar with some of our stops along the way?
We probably will not depart until mid day Monday so likely will stay overnight around Dumas TX or possibly SE of Kansas City MO if we're making good time.

Then we'll stop in Lorain OH for at least a full day to visit relatives.

Also I am wondering if the choices of airports around Barnstable MA have any variable advantages to park the plane for a few days?

It's a long trip so we can wander left or right to stop, and/or see something unique etc.

I may try to line up a way I can do an oil change while we're parked in Barnstable. I'll be bringing everything I need to do a change except for a container to drain the oil into. It takes me a good hour or so and getting out of the wind would be helpful indeed.

Any thoughts?

Cathy,

Block Island is a nice stop! But if I may.....you are coming all the way east....it would be a shame if you didn't take a southern detour route and visit the aviation mecca.....KITTY HAWK! If you can plan and squeeze it in you won't be disappointed!:D

Cathy,
Perry's Island/Put-In-Bay near Sandusky OH is a nice place for a day visit. Your hubby should be familiar with it. I grew up in Columbia Station (your hubby should know that place too...HS football rivals... :D ), and went camping at PIB many times. Got a ride in a Ford Trimotor out of Perry's Island one year. Will never forget that noisy, wonderful ride.

Have a great trip!

P.S. If you're that close to needing an oil change, do it before you leave. Then you don't have to worry about lining up someplace to do it away from home.

The folks at the Falmouth Airpark are quite accommodating!

Mitch chimes in here often. He flies a -4 and is building a -12.

If you would like to slide into the illustrious Hangar #5, we could pull the -6 out and do your oil change. We have a used oil furnace so you wouldn't need to worry about disposal.

;) CJ

Illustrious Hangar #5

Hgr 5 sounds like a great place to visit regardless of oil change. John can you pencil me in for just such an event.

Has anyone been into Cape Cod (Marston Mills)? It looks like a nice quiet place to park too.

Also, as I look at the map I see a route to try as we head back for home that seems a good idea. Here's what I have in mind.

5c0d190fe8d64af1126a7a499e3f5858.jpg

Basically flying down Long Island right through New York City.

Take a left!

Cathy,

Return plan looks good....but you may want to consider the VFR corridor on the Hudson to go through the city....see NY at low altitude!

Also....after NY City....take a left and proceed direct Kitty Hawk:D

Cath,

Cool! Stop by whenever you can. We are often around...

PM me for my cell number.

See you guys soon!

:). CJ

If you opt for a flight down to Kitty Hawk, you're welcome to stop in at 53VG for a rest or snack. Also, Currituck (KONX) usually has good fuel prices and it's just before you get to KFFA.

Addendum: if you still plan to do the oil change during your trip, the hangar at 53VG is large and available. (just finished the condition inspection so it's all setup for the task).

Motivation to fly the Hudson corridor

I second the vote for the Hudson corridor. I just flew it about 10 days ago. It was amazing. Circling the Statue of Liberty was the icing on the cake.

I just read your post about the new air strip. What a wonderful place you have. Awesome video, graphics too. I wonder if I can take a quick temporary retirement from work for a month or two.

Downtown

Up the Hudson looks great. I wonder if I can manage it without bumbling into EWR or LGA airspace? I'll do some research.

Hudson Corridor Info

Cathy,

Flying up the corridor is no problem. And you can do it northbound or southbound (or both). Just make sure you take the FAA online course that provides the training for flying the Hudson corridor. You can also print out a form that gives you all of the necessary information and radio calls for the different points.

It is well worth it! Good luck.

Fernando

The FAA's on-line course for the Hudson River VFR corridor is one of the best developed courses I've taken from the FAA. I was completely comfortable flying the route solo from the materials.

Day Two

More update to follow when we get an internet signal, but while attempting to get into Lorain OH, the wx decided we should stop at Sandusky-Griffing instead. Close!

Day two, where do we go from here

Day 2 to the Cape

We departed Dumas TX and due to some wx we headed north initially towards Liberal KS, then back east towards our first fuel stop just east of Kansas City.

We were getting a nice push with a tailwind so we also pushed out our fuel stop to Hannibal MO, just west of the mighty Mississippi.

This let us make it to Lorain OH from here without another fuel stop....or so we thought.

Skip is learning a lot.
Yesterday he learned that on short final asking questions is a good way to get yelled at.

Whoa, I learned that when I'm not flying stop pushing buttons. Dang, he's learning fast about how to set the GPS and what he wants to look at.
When the day was all said & done we fell just short of our intended destination of Lorain/Elyria OH and opted for Griffing-Sandysky right along the shore of Lake Erie, next to Cedar Point (where people pay good money to make themselves barf)

Day 3, yes day 3, to the Cape

Today we rolled out late. My husband grew up here in Amherst OH, so we were staying with relatives and although we arrived late yesterday we stayed up even later to visit with family.

First things first, lunch. Lake Erie Perch, I have not had it before. Yummy!
2787FA87-703B-4C48-81FF-3BF68ECF2E7F-1648-0000028B6AD76945.jpg

Then we visited some more family, went by the house where Skip and his 3 sisters grew up, meandering to the airport at 3pm. Fortunately we had a short 3 hr flight today.
Only going as far as Simsbury (by BDL) to stay with more relatives.
How does that joke go again honey..."There once was a man from Nantucket"...

Gotta say, I really, really enjoy these threads and if anything motivates me more to get this stinkin' plane finished, I don't know what it is. Keep up the updates!

Here is the beautiful albeit short lived SKY airport, sadly, slated to be closed down at the end of this year. We were going to tie down here...

He offered up this spot instead...

I am really saddened to hear that KSKY Sandusky is closing. I used to live in the Cleveland area and flew to the islands and KSKY many times. I was just by there in the spring and my now 29 year old daughter reminded me of the times we flew to Sandusky for pancakes. Sad. Thanks for all of the years of service Tom.

Anyway, Great write-up acroflyrgirl. Keep it coming and stay safe.

We went over there earlier to see about staying for a couple of days.

I also wanted to inquire about the condition of the grass as it relates to my wheelpants.
All tied down for the night, wheelpants intact, I think.

Griffing Sandusky

Sad to see that airport closing. I first started going there in the 60's on the way to Rockford and later Oshkosh from the Northeast. They used to have a great little snack bar. I had the pleasure of meeting Harry?? Griffing who was the original founder of the airport. Built in 1937.
Todays unfortunate reality is that with a publicly owned facility nearby it is very difficult to maintain a privately owned airport. The runway at Griffing is too short for most corporate traffic and there is no room for expansion.

The good news SKY

The good news about SKY, although the airport is closing (difficult to compete at a pvt strip against public funding) is that the FBO is staying in business. Moving just up the lake to Port Clinton.

Photos disappeared???

What happened to the seven photos in Post #38 in this thread? They all have a Photobucket icon that says "Sorry. This person moved or deleted this image." I didn't get to see them. :(

I don't know what happened to those pix. Sometimes I have seen that on Photobucket and it's been temporary.

More post to come from todays oil change at PYM thanks to John & Billy.
