What did you do with your RV this weekend? (2/24/2023 thru 2/26/2023))

Engine hung

After more than 19 years since I started the empennage, spending most of that time demotivated and frustrated with this project while raising 6 kids and working full time, my mojo has returned. So I thought this was a significant milestone worth posting.:)
I tried to follow the google picture posting instruction but it would seem without success but there is a link.
Who knows, perhaps it might fly in the not too distant future.

Shimmy Investigation

Trying to track down why after over 1200 landings I all of a sudden had a severe shimmy on my left main gear and brake fluid streaming out from the cowl and lower fuselage skin break at firewall. Never had a main gear shimmy before. No fluid on forward or aft side of firewall. I am reviewing lots of old shimmy threads.

I plugged in my preheater at 1700 Friday and unplugged it at 0900 Saturday. Oil went from 40 to 74 degrees.

The plan WAS to do an IFR flight to Waco, but mother nature didn't allow it.

At the time of expected return the ceilings had risen to 400' [There are no instrument approaches to our bit of asphault.

A recent ROTC grad (and future Van's builder?) named Cole posted on this forum a few weeks ago inquiring about any Van's aircraft flying in the Denver area. Well, on Saturday we finally met up and took my RV-14A for a nice evening run 'round the Rockies.

He ships off to Pensacola next week for OCS and hopes to fly whatever the Marine Corps puts in front of him.

Please join me in wishing Cole all the best!

Annual inspection 14a

Finished my first annual inspection- I can’t believe how fast that first year went. Ended up having 65 hours on Tach. For those still building keep at. These planes are so fun to fly. And thanks to Randy Richmond and Danny in his shop for the annual - I learned a ton this week. And will continue to learn I’m sure.

I got to take another one of my grandsons this weekend for his first flight. He did not want to fly but enjoyed it as you can see by his smile.

Friday I flew to Greensboro to have breakfast and visit with Dave (DBone). Surprisingly smooth flight both ways. About 10 minutes of IMC each way. Strong winds. 230kt ground speed heading east at 11,000'. 126kt ground speed with a higher TAS heading west at 10,000' about 4 hours later.

Regards,

Who had more fun

:)

Cherish the time, it will be one of his favorite memories, flying with grandpa.

Semper Fi.......!

Looks like you are over the Coors Brewery in Golden! Great place to take a future Marine!!

Thanks for your future service, Cole! Marines get to fly some cool stuff!! You'll find something you like! Keep us posted!

Finished the 12th annual on this bird. The usual suspects, plus a minor wheel pant repair, new ELT and ignition backup batteries, a prop fresh from the overhaul shop, and a new belt. Then went flying. Once again the world spins on greased grooves.
