Build in my Basement

Hi All,

I am planning on a quick build RV-8A. I want to build in my basement. The basement is large but trying to figure out if I can get the large quick build sections into and out of the basement. Does anyone know the dimensions of the fuselage and wings so that I can experiment on manoeuvring in and out.

I do have a double garage but the climate is better in the basement.

Any advice to help me get started is appreciated

Thanks Tony

You should have a copy of the Vans preview plans (on a thumb drive). Pretty inexpensive and you can print the individual subassembly plans and scale them to answer your question. Overall dimensions are on the 3 view.

I built 2 Cozy MKIV’s through the tub stage along with the completed wings with vertical stabilizers attached in my basement. We cut a hole in the family room floor about 8’ x 10’ and pulled them up and out when the time came. Start to finish that hole set me back about $200 dollars in lumber and 4 hours of work to open it and close it back up and re-stretching the carpet. Go for it!

Garage

Hey Tony,

I?m in Oshawa...built my slow build 8 in my single car garage.

I just had a plug in oil rad heater and I as comfortable all winter long.

Unless you have a straight in and out of your basement or a walk out, I would stay in the garage.

Good luck!

If you need a hand with the build, I?m not too far.

Cheers,

Don

An RV-8 is going to have wings that are ~11' long with a 4' chord. The fuselage is going to be roughly 3' wide x 3' tall, x 16ish feet long without the engine, cowl, empennage, or landing gear installed.

what is the width of the entry door?
Without the turtledeck, turtledeck bulheads, rollbar, instrument panel, upper fwd baggage bulkhead, and midsection brace, you can get the "canoe" on it's side out a 32" wide door. frame (door removed) Limiting factor is the firewall height.

Wings are not a problem if you have the height in the stairwell to make the "tilt"

It can be done.

My basement was a garage-under. So it has a garage door.

It took careful measurement and precise positioning, but turned out I could mount BOTH! wings. I was even able to squeeze by the wing tips and not have to walk around the long way.

After the critical incidence drilling, they came back off.

Tail feathers were not an issue at all to mount, but the HS will not fit thru the garage door. Not a problem for me as I only had it on for the trial fitting/install and wanted it off for painting.

Built mine in our temperature controlled basement. All clearance measurements were made prior to placing the fuselage on the gear. Rolled her out with the help of a car dolly under each wheel. Clearance from the gear to the house walls and pylons was less than 1/2" on each side as planned. Like a Chinese jigsaw puzzle but we had her out in about an hour. No walls to tear down, no holes to cut. Get a set of plans, measure and compare to the room you need in your workshop. Empennage assembly was done in the garage and final assembly was done at the airport. From the pictures you see to flying was about 2 months since most everything had already been done in the shop.
