LOE 2011 Pireps

It's a little windy and rainy, but LOE is still the time for friends and fun. Once again, the aiport staff is super helpful, and the vendors and local businesses are showing their appreciation. Hopefully, we will still raise lots of money for the charity.

Lots of beer to go around this year. Many thanks to Steve and Richard Fowler of America's Aircraft Engines for keeping the group watered.

Gotta love local brews.

Trutrak's poor little 12 was having a hard time keeping on the ground in the wind. Andrew decided to give it a hand, foot, another hand, and another foot.

Glad you folks are having a good time!

Louise and I took a look at the forecasts out through Sunday, and it just didn't look like a reasonable risk trade to get stuck up there when we needed to be back, so we called and "wired" some money up for some raffle tickets and will have to enjoy building here instead. We'll just turn the weekend into a long RV-3 building session I guess....

First time I've missed LOE in 6 years - and for Louise I think it is 8!

The banquet was a hit as usual. Also, the ice cream run after had a great showing as well. Rosie, we are still carrying that torch :). Now we are back at the hotel planning our impossible escape. There are 11 RVs on the ramp today, including ours. Got the badge and the tee shirt.

Planned to fly down & see you all & meet some of you today. Mostly I wanted to look at airplanes. Weather, however, conspired against me.

Be sure to post pictures.

Hang on Andrew! :D

Very sorry we missed it also, but the weather just did not warrant the risk for us. We will be there next year even if we have to (gulp) drive!

Thanks SO MUCH for carrying the torch Scott and Tanya!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's painful to read about LOE instead of being there :( Rosie & Tuppergal

LOE 11

Even though we had wind on Friday and rain all day Saturday, it was a GREAT get together. Good friends, good times, good food, good beer, good prizes, and a good amount of money to a wonderful cause...lots of other amazing things as well.

As a member of the LOE 11 11...I have to say this was a major success once again. Thanks to big and little Russ for getting it all together.

Now...next year we need more than 11 airplanes to stay the entire time.

LOE '11

Russ & Russ put on a great event, thanks guys....:) On the other hand "Mother Nature" didn't do such a great job...:( We did have one couple show up out of the gray muck Saturday evening in time for the dinner from Seattle Washington, sorry I forgot their names but that's what I call hard core RVers. The city of Weatherford has really taken this fly-in under their wing as great hosts. The FOB crew are outstanding also.....looking forward to next year back there..... Oh I had a really great night in the raffle one of my numbers was picked for the $1,000 tool give away from Avery Tools :D Can not wait to call Bob in the morning and fill out my want list....Oh, Well Doug said it was a $1,000 certificate .

We're still in Oklahoma

We did not make it very far this morning. We're in Elk City OK and still waiting for the clouds to lift. Rain has stopped but the ceiling is 300 scattered and 1100 overcast. It's looking better to the west but that changes every 10 minutes.

We had a great time at LOE 11, 11 planes on the ground this morning. Not good but the raffle still raised a ton of money for the charities.

We could not drink all the beer so we need more help next year.

Update: We're overnighting it in Elk City, OK. The skies are clearing now and the forecast looks good for a Denver run in the morning.

gz

Update 2: We're home. 1300 overcast this morning so we flew south 20 miles to get on top. The layer finally petered out around Lamar Colorado. Great time had by all but its always nice to be home.

Walkers are home at 40XS as well. Left under moderately low ceiling with light rain as a 2 ship with the Cards, headed southwest for a while till the rain stopped, then turned south. Climbed up to 5,500 for the 1.5 hr flight to Lampasas as which point we ducked under the deck to make it the rest of the way. We're all safe - enjoyed ALMOST every minute of it .... watching the 'Horns on the big screen was painfull .... ;o) Thanks to ALL who had a hand in making this happen !

LOE 2011 Write Up

Russ & Ann Daves arrived at Weatherford, Oklahoma on Thursday afternoon to start getting everything together for the Fly-In. Russ considered it an honor to be asked to serve as Co-Chair of the event along with Russ Kamtz.

Friday dawned windy and cloudy, but the winds were right down the runway from the South. Everyone coming in from the South and Southwest had a great tailwind. Coming down from the North was very problematic both for extremely strong headwinds as well as lots of thunderstorms and rain.

Andrew and Fernando, in the TruTtrk RV-12, were the first arrivals on Friday morning. About a dozen airplanes flew in on Friday, but a number of people drove in for the event. Lucille?s Road House provided Hamburgers and Hotdogs for Lunch on both Friday and Saturday, with 100% of the monies paid for lunch donated to the Charity ($391.00 total). Lucille?s and the City of Weatherford each donated ? of the cost of the food for Friday and Saturday lunches and Lucille?s provided their cooking wagon and staff to cook and serve lunch.

After a great Friday of visiting and talking airplanes, we had a free beer and wine social provided by American?s Aircraft Engines, ECI, and Coop?s AleHouse who brought their beer wagon over from OK City. After the social most everyone went to Lucille?s for dinner on Friday night.

Saturday morning dawned partly cloudy with strong winds and a few more people flew in for the day. The Texas OU football game wasn?t very lively, what with most of the Dallas crowd being weathered in. It may have been good that one of the Dallas RV-8 builders wasn?t present; otherwise the big screen TV might have had beer bottles thrown at it. The crew from Lucille?s cooked hot dogs and hamburgers outside in the cook wagon but served lunch inside in the large screen TV room because by lunch the rain had started and continued the rest of the day and into the night.

Saturday evening, going over to the big hanger for the social with the rain coming down pretty hard, and seeing ONLY 11 airplanes on the ramp (6 left early to beat the weather) gave me a little concern about getting enough raffle tickets sold to at least raise as much for the BACKPACK FOOD 4 KIDS charity as we had given them last year. But true to form the small crowd that flew and drove to the Fly-In dug deep in their pockets and we raised more for the BACKPACK FOOD 4 KIDS charity this year than we did last year. As co-chairs of LOE 2011 our heartfelt thanks go out to those who left money for the charity even though they left and went home early, as well as those who sent money with others, and especially those at the Fly-In who dug deep at the very end to make this a great event! The rain certainly did not dampen the spirit of this crowd!

The City of Weatherford, through John Creswell, the airport manager, had booked 100 meals with the catering company for Saturday night?s BBQ banquet. With only about 50 there to feed, I approached John about the possibility of attempting to get some of the participants to buy some of the barbeque to take back home and John told me that he had asked the caterer to smoke and cook the extra meats partially and pull it off the smoker so they could freeze it and use it for another city activity later this year. John indicated that the City of Weatherford was happy to absorb the extra cost. John Creswell and his ?girl Friday?, Sharon Fleming, went above and beyond to try and make us not only feel welcome this year and last year, but also made it clear that they want us to keep coming back.

For those of you who missed LOE 2011 you will surely want to plan on making it next year, even if you have to drive.

Thanks again for making this the biggest, per capita, LOE fund raiser ever!

We're home!

Hawk and his Kat stayed another day/night at Weatherford. We "may" have been able to slip out early on Sunday if we'd tried, but "may" wasn't good enough after reviewing the DUATS. I, like many others, have read about "stupid pilot tricks" concerning weather, and then said, "I'd never do something as stupid as that!" The questionable weather on Sunday gave me the chance to prove that I wouldn't do something that would immortalize me on the NTSB reports. As a result, we were stuck without transportation until "sweetheart" Sharon hooked us up with a courtesy car! Got to see some of the local sites and watch part of a combat pistol match (in the rain!) at the Tin Star Shooting Range. Very cool! Got home today about 4:30MST after 4.8 hours of flying with headwinds and a bit of scud-running for a hundred miles or so until we could slip up on top. Had a great time, enjoyed all the hangar flying with old and new friends and are looking forward to next year.

Food 4 Kids - Feeding Weatherford's `chronically' hungry children
Published February 9, 2011 ? Weatherford Daily News

Julie Harding
Lifestyles Editor

The number of chronically hungry children in our community is growing, according to Weatherford Food 4 Kids Coordinator Barbara Jones.

"It's heartbreaking to think there are kids in Weatherford, Oklahoma that are chronically hungry," Jones said. "Not just hungry - chronically hungry."

Jones said "chronically hungry" means "Friday through Monday they have no food or very little food" and the only time they are able to eat are during school hours when breakfast and lunch is served.

According to the Food 4 Kids Weatherford program, last year there were 43 children receiving assistance - this year there are 89 children receiving backpacks filled with food for the weekend.

Food 4 Kids is a program of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, designed especially for elementary age children. Chronically hungry children identified by school personnel receive a backpack filled with non-perishable, child-friendly food to sustain them over weekends and school holidays when school program meals are not
available.

"These kids have to take care of their backpacks and return them clean and in good shape when they come back to school," Jones said. "One of our kids came back to school with a dirty backpack, covered in leaves. When the counselor talked to him about the condition of his backpack, he said his parents were taking his food, so he was hiding the backpack from them outside under a pile of leaves. We hear some really heartbreaking stories."

Jones said the program received a break this year at an annual fly-in at the Thomas P. Stafford Regional Airport. She said pilots from around the country get together once a year at the annual "flyin" and donate money to a good cause in the area. This year they donated $6,000 to the program, but with the increase in chronically hungry kids the money for next year is still in short supply.

"If it weren't for that money (received from the fly-in) we wouldn't be having the Food 4 Kids program this year," Jones said. "If the money runs out, there is no program."

Food 4 Kids supporter and teacher Bruce Belanger said the benefits of the program mean more than helping with hunger pangs.

"It's not just about the food," Belanger said. "There are ripple effects, because these kids are able to focus better on their schoolwork and their behavior improves when they aren't hungry all the time."

Community members can help by Volunteering at the Food Bank or at an area school. They can also make a financial donation to the program - $200 will provide enough food for one child for the entire school year. A gift of $5,000 will provide enough food for 25 chronically hungry children for an entire school year.
