Standing on her own three feet!

Well Known Member
She's standing on her own three feet! A long hot day with dad helping, a few requisite scattered choice words thrown in, and she's grown legs.

Those main gear legs were a total pain to get all the way up into the weldments. Both legs were just about 1/16" shy. I had previously reamed both the weldments' and legs' bolt holes to full size, so I knew those were okay. Ended up having to sacrifice some long AN4 bolts as whack-a-bolt fulcrums in the holes to pull the legs up that much more. Got the big AN5 bolts started in, and applied a more than liberal amount of "persuasion", courtesy of the rivet gun.

With the Beringer brakes, the brake caliper directly bolts into the hole on the axle. You do not need the little flange weldment that comes with the finishing kit. But I didn't even realize the bolt hole was there until after I had gotten all excited, installed the brake disc and caliper on the wheel, and would the safety wire around the wheel. ARGH! Off with the safety wire, disassemble everything, ream out the one hole of the caliper's axle sleeve, etc etc etc.

Next note - the hex Allen screws are basically the same size as what's called out in the C2 plans. But, naturally being Beringer and Euro-zone, it's #4 (maybe #5? I forget now) metric. You'll need two (2) of the 516 washers on the screw head side, and no 416 or additional 516 washer on the nut side. The screw will have just enough thread left for the nut to be Gud'n'tite. With the 416 washer, as in the plans, there won't be enough. Even better, you don't have to grind the 516's as the plans say.

Getting the wheel on afterwards was straightforward...

Nosewheel was downright easy... save for getting the bolt to clear through the firewall hole. Growl. Enough other builders have written about that here that I won't add any more 2 cents. The penny wishing fountain is already filled.

Next up... Probably next weekend... MOVING DAY!

Scott, those red wheels look great. Real quality. When I put mine on it's wheels, I had to hand a bucket full of rock salt from the motor mount to keep the tail off the ground!

Those wheels are making me envious. I may have to copy you on them!! I missed AV because of weather this year. Maybe next year!

Looking good

Alright Scott. Now that you got it standing up when you going to get it over to Butler and get the rest of it put together? Great progress.
