In Search of Small Kneeboard

Since my panel is full EFIS with approach plates, I no longer need to fly with my iPad Mini powered on and strapped to my leg for IFR charts. But, I do need to write clearances and frequencies down as needed. So I am looking for a small form factor kneeboard that's just big enough to hold a small pad of paper and will fit in the RV. Most of the paper kneeboards are multi-fold or overkill for what I need.

Has anyone found a good, small, lightweight kneeboard for paper?

I have a very nice simple kneeboard - it hold a standard 5x7 pad and has a couple of places to put pens/pencils. It's cordora type fabric and works great in the RV. Only problem is I don't remember the brand name off-hand. I'll check when I'm at my hanger.

Post #3 wasn't there when I was typing my reply - but that's the one that I have.

Mark,

Don't know if they are available in the US but the Piccolo kneeboards are very good. Just 4.3" wide by 7.3" high. I have one and like it a lot. I print my own blank plogs from an excel template of my own design. I get 6 blanks (3 across by 2 rows) per A4 page. Print double-sided so get 12 flight plogs per sheet of A4 paper.

Not that common here in Europe but found this German website that sells them. Dirt cheap.

You're a builder, right?

Make your own. I bought an inexpensive plain vanilla aluminum clipboard at Whatever Office Supply, cut it down to 7.125 x 4.125, then pop riveted on a wide velcro strap. Used it for many XC sailplane flights, placed in service in 1981. The photo was taken a few minutes ago. Never got around to removing the "slasher" pencil holder. Never got slashed enough I guess.

Probably the smallest and most compact is the 9G. Popular amongst military. 9G Plus is same but with added strap. I have both.

Prices seem to vary between $35 and $45.

+1 on this. It was my third kneeboard, trying to find the right one. Compact... does what I need without all the extraneous bunk that makes for good marketing but is useless in real life. No interference with the stick and no bi-fold / tri-fold cumbersome form factor. I don't know about you, but I have three GPS' in the cockpit and can't remember the last time I used a whiz wheel. Why would I want a kneeboard to hold one?

Minor downside... It doesn't hold a flashlight tightly. It will fall out moving it around (fine in flight when strapped to your thigh, just a problem moving in and out of the cockpit).

Second ZULU works. I have the Mini which works great in the side by side even when worn on right leg with passenger. Had the ASA standard 5"x7" which was fine until you have someone sitting next to you and you need to adjust the trim.
YMMV
