What did you do with your RV this weekend? (1/22/22 - 1/23/22)

.. So what did you do with your RV/RV kit this weekend??

Me -- I didn't really do anything with my RV. As a matter of fact, soon I won't even own one (!) but I did do something with my Debonair that involves an RV.

Yesterday, we flew from Fallbrook (L18) to Oceano (L52) for lunch. We had a very good lunch at the Rock & Roll Diner. Beautiful day for a flight; the Santa Ana winds were blowing, so I thought that it may be bumpy, but it wasn't too bad at all. Looking at PIREPS, north of SNA and south of SMO, and as far east as PSP, it was obvious that there was turbulence at the lower altitudes, but we did not feel much of anything. 10,500' up and 11,500' down. Great flight. The temperature was just right, and the Debonair was performing great - 200 KTAS at 10,500'

What makes this RV related? When we walked back to the airport, as I walked back to my airplane, an RV-8 pulled up. I had a brief conversation with the owner, who was looking forward to getting it painted soon. He came in from HWD.

Managed to do two Touch-and-Go on ice near Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport. Ice fishermen nearby were excited. Sorry no pictures left camera in the truck :)

Read Mike Busch on Engines

Finished reading "Mike Bush on Engines". What a great read, seriously. Highly recommended.
Then went out and flew some flight test profiles.

RV Weekend

The weekend started off nerve racking as I coaxed my wife into the plane with me (a rare event). Turns out it there was some pretty significant wind inversions we had to fly through in our short flight. Luckily I prepared her for the worst so she wasn't scared with a few bumps. I then proceeded to have 2 good landings to help build her confidence. Whohoo!

Sunday I flew with a friend East over Lake Tahoe to explore a few Nevada airfields- Dayton Valley (O34) and the Taildragger Cafe in Minden (MEV). As I landed at Dayton there was someone taxiing to leave and I inquired on CTAF about a pilots lounge where we could relieve ourselves and stretch. The departing pilot said he wasn't from the area, and while he wasn't aware of any pilot facilities, there was a friendly couple sitting in their driveway watching the traffic and enjoying the sun. We taxied over to the driveway and spent the next few hours in fantastic conversation with a famous member of this forum! This community is so awesome...

Here are few shots from the flight over Lake Tahoe.

Inst.allied new alternator and then flew to Yuma Arizona for dinner. Alternator now puts out 14.5 volts no doubt about it. My olde alternator was at 13.5. Thanks Jerod for the quick ship! Now home and flying to another airport tomorrow to get the booster 7 minute walk away.

I pulled my motor and plan on taking it and a brand new crankshaft down to Premier this Tuesday. I'll be sitting on my hands for the next few months.

frozen fiberglass

Chipped away at the last bit of fabrication - upper intersection fairings. These RVBits fairings are good quality but they will require modifications to fit around the Grove Gear legs and brackets. Trying to do fiberglass work in an unheated hangar during MI winter can be problematic... but I'm trying to resist the urge to hibernate until spring.

Too cold

No flying for me and the 8 this weekend...
Brutal cold... -32C (-26F) in the morning

If not the cold, winds and or snow...
Must be patient...

Took the better half up for a quick Bay Tour and lunch in Half Moon Bay. What a beautiful day to fly around the coast.

So glad you shared this. I lived in the Bay Area for 24 years; learned to fly at PAO; used to fly over Half Moon Bay frequently and did a few Bay Tours. Your photos of the Golden Gate Bridge include my favorite place on the entire planet: Marin Headlands. When I'm gone, my ashes will be scattered there.

Landed on the ice

Made a trip to Gull Lake, AB to land on the seasonal ice strip….it is very well maintained.

Also first time seeing Flaming Gorge despite living in Wyoming most of my life.

Would have loved to stop there but wife was already mad when she realized I was in Colorado and Utah. :)

It was on Sunday when I flew over.

Thank You Martin! I fly it often, I love Half Moon Bay especially this time of year. Next flight out I'll make sure to get some of Marin and share them. For now here is an older April 2020 photo you may enjoy. This was taken when the quarantine started and there were no cars on the road (little smog) so the visibility was amazing. If you look close you can see the James Lick Observatory up on the mountain over San Jose in the distance.

I envy you Darin good job landing on hard water! I doubt I could find a decent ice runway this year. I still have February of cold winter in Wyoming but deep snow on the lakes makes it impossible to find a spot.

There is an iconic fly in at CYLB in early March this year, after a 2yr you know why hiatus, where not only do they do an ice runway but they also have car and motorcycle racing on a closed track, snowmobile racing as well as a furrier’s market where anything from raw pelts to hats, gloves and other fur fabrications can be found. The whole town and surrounding area get into this late winter fest!
